Clint Dempsey and Fulham came away empty handed against Stoke but Brad Friedel and Tottenham drew Newcastle to keep extended their unbeaten streak to five games.

Stoke 2-0 Fulham

Fulham were unable to continue their winning ways in their first game back from the international window as they fell on the road to Stoke on Saturday.

Clint Dempsey started and played a full 90 for Fulham after playing 180 minutes for the United States over the break.

The game remained scoreless until the 80th minute when Jonathan Walters scored from close range after a Matthew Etherington header off a corner.

In the 87th minute Rory Delap put the game out of reach when he headed home a Walters' free kick from seven yards to make the score 2-0.

Fulham return to action on Thursday when they travel to Poland to take on Wisla Krakow in a Europa League matchup. Next Sunday they play their next Premier League game when they host Everton.

Chelsea 3-1 Everton

After a strong start to the Premier League, Everton lost their third straight game on Saturday when they were defeated by Chelsea in London.

As usual, Tim Howard started and played the full 90 for Everton.

The hosts scored their first goal of the game when Juan Mata found left back Ashley Cole. The English international then delivered a perfect cross to Daniel Sturridge who headed home with ease for a 1-0 score.

Howard was partly at fault for the second Chelsea goal in first half injury time when he was unable to handle a Frank Lampard free kick. As a result, John Terry was able to head home the rebound to make the score 2-0.

Brazlian midfielder Ramires gave Chelsea a third when he tapped home a Mata cross on a break to make it 3-0.

Apostolos Vellios ruined the shutout for Chelsea when he scored just seconds after entering to the game. On the play he moved into the box and sent home a Royston Drenthe cross to finish the scoring at 3-1.

Everton will hope to return to winning ways next Sunday when they visit Fulham

Tottenham 2-2 Newcastle

Tottenham Hotspur had their four game winning streak in the Premier League snapped as they played to a draw on Sunday against Newcastle.

Brad Friedel went the distance for Tottenham.

Tottenham got on the board first when Rafael van der Vaart converted a penalty in the 40th minute. On the play Newcastle defender Steven Taylor tripped up Emmanuel Adebayor just inside the penalty box and van der Vaart had no trouble converting the penalty to make the score 1-0.

In the 48th minute, Demba Ba evened for Newcastle at 2-2 when Jonas Gutierrez made a run down the left side and sent the ball into the box that Ba sent in from close range. For Ba, it was fifth goal in three games.

Tottenham regained the lead in the 68th minute when Jermaine Defoe hit a low shot past Newcastle keeper Tim Krul to gain a 2-1 advantage.

Newcastle found a late equalizer when Shola Ameobi took a pass from Yohan Cabaye and hit a powerful drive into the lower left corner of the net to even the score at 2-2.

Tottenham will next face Blackburn Rovers on the road next Sunday.

Walsall 1-0 Preston North End

Walsall came away with three important points to move into the middle of the League One standings when they defeated Preston North End at home.

Anton Peterlin went the distance for Walsall.

Alex Nicholls scored the only goal of the game in the 10th minute when he took a cross from Kevan Hurst and fired into the top of goal past Preston keeper Ian Turner for a 1-0 lead.

Walsall midfielder David Martin was sent off with a straight red card in the 71st minute however Preston North End were unable to take advantage in the final 19 minutes.

Next up for Walsall is a visit to Tranmere Rovers next Saturday.

Notes

Brad Guzan did not get off the bench for Aston Villa as Manchester City came away with an easy 4-1 win.

Zak Whitbread is still injured and was not part of Norwich City's 3-1 win over Swansea

Robbie Findley played the final 14 minutes for Nottingham Forest in a 1-0 loss to Coventry.

Conor Doyle remained as an unused substitute for Derby County in a 1-1 draw with Southampton.

Jonathan Spector did not get off the bench for Birmingham City in a 2-0 win over Leicester City

Frank Simek is still recovering from an injury and was not in the 18 for Carlisle United as they cruised to a 3-0 win over Yeovil Town.

Mike Grella came off the bench and played the final 26 minutes for Brentford in a listless 0-0 draw against Scunthorpe.

John Paul Pittman was not in the matchday 18 for Crawley Town for their 2-1 win over Shrewsbury.

Likewise, Jemal Johnson did not dress for Southend United in a 1-1 stalemate with Morecambe.
