WILLIAMS NAMED US U-18 HEAD COACH

US Soccer today announced that former US national team midfielder Richie Williams has been hired to be the new head coach of the US U-18 national team.

Williams, 41, will replace Mike Matkovich who previously was the coach of the US U-18 team.

Williams retired as a player in 2005 and immediately pursued a career in coaching. In 2005 and 2006 he was an assistant coach at his alma mater the University of Virginia.

From 2006-2011 Williams was an assistant coach for the New York Red Bulls but he had two stints as an interim head coach in 2006 and 2009. He was fired by the Red Bulls organization in February 2011.

As a player, Williams will best be remember for helping lead DC United to three MLS Cups in 1996, 1997, and 1999.

On the international front, Williams earned 20 caps for the US national team and he was part of the 2002 Gold Cup team that won the title.
