CLINT WADDELL - Friday, January 6, 2012
In his first practice session with FC Nürnberg, Omar Gonzalez ruptured the ACL in his left knee. What was first thought to be a minor injury will end up sidelining the USMNT defender for months.

"That is definitely bitter for him," said Martin Bader, the Sport Executive and Spokesperson at FC Nürnberg. "Omar came to us with great expectations."

Gonzalez had left the US training camp to join his new club on loan on Wednesday, and was injured in the first session on Thursday after a challenge by fellow American Timothy Chandler.

Head coach Dieter Hecking was going to use this loan spell to decide on whether or not to keep the 23-year-old central defender for a longer period of time. This makes this option impossible.

Gonzalez will complete this whirlwind journey on Saturday when he returns to Los Angeles to be treated by the LA Galaxy staff.

"The most important thing is for him to get healthy again," said Bader. "We will definintely be in contact with him."

Alex, Gooch had a patella(sp) tendon problem not an ACL. Not sure if one is necessarily worse than another but I know many players have recovered from ACL tears, they are not uncommon but there are different severities so only the med staff knows for sure the long term impact I'd guess

Desi, you've seen the way Chandler plays, right? He rarely stays on defense.

That's painful. He must be gutted

Anybody out there know something about ACL's. Specifically does it matter to your recovery if you are a speedy little guy or a hulking brute. Isn't this what got Gooch as well?

This is why so many teams are reluctant to do these 2 month loans. It was only a matter of time. Big loss

You'll be in contact with him, all right, Mr. Bader. With a check.

Between Chandler and Jones, well, I'm not going to say it.

Talk about bad luck. But that's pro sports.

Why, even in any training match or scrimmage...small side game etc, would a left back ever challenge a center back?

This was a mob hit.

We will be in touch and the check is in the mail.
