BRIAN SCIARETTA - Friday, January 6, 2012
US U-23 head coach Caleb Porter today announced a 22 player roster for an upcoming camp that will also feature a pair of friendlies in Costa Rica against

The roster consists of six players that are currently based in Europe, 11 players based in MLS, two players based in Mexico, and three players based in NCAA.

Two of the three college based players in Andrew Wenger and Kelyn Rowe have already signed with MLS and are expected to be top draft picks in this month's SuperDraft.

Leading the European contingent are Norwegian based Mikkel Diskerud and Josh Gatt. Diskerud has already earned two caps with the senior national team and has played in 80 games for Stabaek in Norway's top league, the Eliteserien.

Gatt, 20, is coming of an impressive season in 2011 where he emerged as a top player for Molde who won their first Eliteserien title.

Among the MLS based players, versatile defender Zarek Valentin figures to be an important part of the team's backline and Freddy Adu hopes to get his career back on track after being a standout four years ago with the US Olympic team in 2008.

There are, however, many top players U-23 players missing from this team. Bill Hamid, Sean Johnson, Brek Shea, Juan Agudelo, and Teal Bunbury are currently with the US national team for their annual January camp.

European-based players Timothy Chandler, Danny Williams, Danny Potts, Jozy Altidore, Joe Gyau, and Terrence Boyd are currently training with their clubs.

The US U-23 team will take on Saprissa Reserves on January 21, and Alajuela on January 24.
