American midfielder/forward Alex Smith signed a contract extension with Wellington Phoenix for the remained of the A-League season.

Wellington press officer Russell Gray confirmed to YA that an offer to Smith was made on Tuesday but on Wednesday the deal was signed.

Smith, 26, has seen regular minutes for Wellington since he joined the club in October after being controversially released by A-League club Gold Coast United in the off season.

His contract was initially an injury replacement deal that was to expire in December. Soon after it was extended through January and now through the end of the season

Through the team's 17 games this season, Smith has made 12 appearances including eight starts.

Wellington Phoenix, who are the only A-League club based in New Zealand, currently sits in fourth place with 24 points. They trail third place Melbourne Heat by only one point.

Wellington Phoenix return to action on Friday when they visit ninth place Newcastle Jets.
