Clint Dempsey scored a historic hat trick in a big win for Fulham over Newcastle United, while Brad Friedel and Tottenham agonizingly went down to Manchester City in a Premier League clash.

Fulham 5-2 Newcastle United

Clint Dempsey was on fire in Fulham's big victory over Newcastle United this weekend.

The Texan scored a hat trick in the match, the first one ever for an American in the Premier League. Dempsey started and was subbed out in the dying moments of the game.

Newcastle opened the scoring in the 43rd minute when Danny Guthrie found the back of the net.

But, the Cottagers made a storming comeback and never looked behind.

Danny Murphy scored on a penalty kick to level the game in the 52nd minute.

Dempsey opened his account in the 59th minute when he knocked in a rebound after an initial Bobby Zamora shot.

Zamora then found Dempsey on the counterattack in the 65th minute, and the Texan slotted home from ten yards out.

In the 68th minute, the Cottagers found the back of the net again when Zamora scored on a penalty kick.

Again in the 89th minute, Zamora sent in an elevated through pass that found Dempsey, who pushed forward passed two defenders and scored his third of the game.

The win separates Fulham from the relegation zone by a comfortable eight points, while United's loss misses them a shot at jumping Arsenal for a Europa League spot.

Davide Santon, Danny Guthrie, Danny Smith, and Tim Krul were booked for Newcastle.

The Cottagers take on Everton in the FA Cup on Friday, while Newcastle play Brighton & Hove Albion in tournament action as well on Saturday.

Manchester City 3-2 Tottenham Hotspur

Brad Friedel and Tottenham Hotspur went down to Manchester City in a battle of Premier League heavyweights.

The American ‘keeper started and went the distance for Spurs.

After a scoreless first half, City opened the scoring in the 56th minute, as David Silva sent in a defense splitting pass that found Samir Nasri who impressively shot passed Friedel.

Just moments later Joleon Lescott found the back of the net on a corner kick that was partially touched by Edin Dzeko.

One minute later, Jermain Defoe cut the lead in half for Spurs, as a pass into the City defense reached Stefan Savic whose mistimed header found Defoe who rounded Joe Hart and scored.

In the 65th minute, Spurs struck again as Aaron Lennon found Gareth Bale just outside the box. Bale sent in a left footed strike passed Hart to put the visiting fans into a frenzy.

Minutes later Bale sent in a pass that just missed Defoe on the counterattack. Defoe would have had an open net for a possible game winning goal for Spurs.

City though were triumphant in the end, as Mario Balotelli knocked in a penalty kick after Ledley King had taken down the Italian in the box moments before.

Cael Clichy and Balotelli were booked for City, while Scott Parker received a yellow card for Spurs.

City take on Liverpool in league cup action this midweek, while Spurs play Watford on Friday in FA Cup action.

Everton 1-1 Blackburn Rovers

Tim Howard and Landon Donovan featured in Evertons draw against Blackburn Rovers this Saturday.

The American duo started and went the distance for Everton. American eligible defender Adam Henley made the game day roster but did not feature for Blackburn.

Everton opened the scoring in the 24th minute when Donovan sent in a cross that Marouane Fallaini headed to goal. The shot was saved and the initial rebound reached the Belgian who guided it to Tim Cahill. The Australian found the back of the net.

In the 72nd minute Rovers equalized after a series of defensive mishaps by Everton resulted in a David Goowillie goal.

Royston Drenthe and Darron Gibson were booked for Everton while Radosav Petrovic and David Hollet received yellow cards for Rovers.

The Toffees take on Fulham in FA Cup action this coming week while Rovers play Newcastle United a week from Wednesday.

Norwich City 0-0 Chelsea

Zak Whitbread and Norwich City were held to a draw at home against Chelsea in Premier League play.

Whitbread started and went the distance for the Canaries.

Chelsea had a clear advantage in possession, as the London team had over 58% of the ball. They also had more corner kicks and shots than Norwich.

Despite the strong play, Chelsea never found the back of the net.

The Blues keep their spot in the standings, as the teams around them, Arsenal and Tottenham, lost.

City is in 9th place and seven points from a Europa League spot.

The Canaries take on West Bromwich Albion next week in the FA Cup, while Chelsea plays Queens Park Rangers in tournament play as well.

Birmingham City 3-0 Watford

Jonathan Spector and Birmingham City continue their strong play as they beat Watford in Championship play.

Spector started and went the distance for the Blues.

Curtis Davies scored two goals for City, while Chris Burke rounded out the goals in the 81st minute.

Nikola Zigic, was booked for Birmingham while Carl Dickinson received a yellow card for Watford.

City is currently in a playoff spot and is in an 8 game unbeaten streak. Watford is in 18th place, six points above the relegation zone.

The Blues take on Sheffield United in FA Cup play next week, while hosts Tottenham in the same tournament.

Carlisle United 1-1 Walsall

In a battle of Americans, Frank Simek and Carlisle United tied Anton Peterlin and Walsall in League One play.

Simek and Peterlin started and went the distance for their respective teams.

Lee Miller scored early for Carlisle in the 7th minute, while Walsall's Alex Nicholls found the back of the net in the 82nd minute.

The Cumbrians missed a shot at solidifying a spot in the playoffs. They are in 7th place now and trail Stevenage, who hold the final playoff spot, by just goal differential.

Walsall are in 20th place and just one point above the relegation zone.

James Berrett received a yellow card for Carlisle, while Andy Butler was booked for Walsall.

Carlisle plays Hartlepool United in league play next week, while Walsall plays Notts County.


George John and Daniel Potts did not feature in West Ham United's win against Nottingham Forest. Robbie Findley did not play for Forest.

Conor Doyle did not feature in Derby County's draw against Burnley.

Robbie Rogers did not dress in Leeds United's win over Ipswich Town. Cody Cropper is recovering from injury and did not play for Ipswich Town.
