CHRISTOPHER MCCOLLUM - Wednesday, January 25, 2012
Michael Orozco's stint at the top of the table with San Luis was a short one, as they took an unexpected loss that dropped them down while Club Tijuana and Santos Laguna are now tied at the top

San Luis 0-2 Morelia

Michael Orozco went 90 minutes for San Luis, but saw his short tenure at the top of the table come to an end as Jaime Lozano and Joao Rojas scored for Morelia.

In the 11th minute, midfielder Aldo Ramirez collected a headed clearance from a corner kick outside the right corner of the box, and served it back into the box. The ball was well placed and went over the heads of San Luis' defenders who had begun to push up out of the box. The ball fell to the feet of Jaime Lozano at the back post who volleyed it in low past goalkeeper Oscar Perez.

Morelia would convert again 72nd when Edgar Lugo chipped the ball over the back line for Joao Rojas to run onto. Rojas beat defender Jesus Chavez with a quick cut, freeing him up to walk in on goal unimpeded, before slotting it past Perez.

San Luis will next host America on January 28.

Tijuana 2-0 Chivas

Edgar Castillo started and played 54 minutes for Tijuana, while neither Joe Corona or Greg Garza made the bench, as Tijuana defeated Chivas to go to the top of the standings in a three way tie.

Jose Sand scored a brace, starting in the 16th minute as he jumped on the end of a deflected cross from defender Miguel Quiroz, who played the ball in from the right flank. Sand leaped on the ball and slid it home past goalkeeper Luis Michel.

Sand would connect again in the 84th minute, this time off of a neat pass from Duvier Riascos that found Sand open in the left side of the box, where he would fire it past Michel to the far post.

The game would end a few minutes later, putting Tijuana up to the top of the table with seven points after three games.

Tijuana will next host Santos on January 29.

Pachuca 1-1 Cruz Azul

Jose Torres went 90 minutes for Pachuca in the battle with one of their fellow contenders. Torres collected a yellow card in the 63rd minute.

Jaime Corozo scored for Puebla, receiving a pass from the left flank played by Daniel Arguello. The ball went straight into Corozo's path and he hit first time to the near post, beating goalkeeper Jesus Corona.

Emanuel Villa netted for Cruz Azul in the 29th minute to draw level. Villa got on the end of a cross in the box that was headed down to him towards the far post by Christian Giminez. Villa made no mistake with the half volley, putting it past goalkeeper Rodolfo Cota.

Mauro Cejas received a red card for Pachuca in the 44th minute when the ball was played back to Cruz Azul's goalkeeper Corona, and Cejas decided the best way to get around the defender to pressure Corona was by elbowing him in the face. Despite the entire team swarming around the referee to protest the impending decision, there was never any doubt about which color card was coming.

Pachuca next plays Queretaro at home on January 28.

Santos Laguna 1-0 Chiapas

Herculez Gomez got into the game in the 73rd minute for Santos as the green and white stole away with a late winning goal.

Aaron Galindo had the lone goal of the game in the 86th minute when he got on the end of a service into the box from 35 yards out on the right flank, sent in by Juan Rodriguez. Chiapas goalkeeper Edgar Hernandez came out to try to punch the ball away, but Galindo got their first to head it past Hernandez and into the open net.

The win put Santos into a three way tie for first place. They will visit Tijuana on January 29.

Puebla 1-2 Atlante

DaMarcus Beasley went 90 minutes for the first time this season as Puebla took another disappointing result against Atlante.

Luis Garcia got the lone goal for Puebla, which was not enough to haul back the deficit created by Osvaldo Martinez and Andres Mendoza's goals.

The first of Atlante's goals came from Martinez in the 38th minute as he struck a hard shot that got about three feet off the ground, from about 24 yards out in the center of the field. The ball was laid off to him by Michael Mina, who saw Martinez setting up unmarked.

Andres Mendoza would put Atlante ahead by another in the 70th minute following a 50 yard run from Oscar Vera down the left flank, before squaring the ball into the middle of the box to Mendoza who beat Alexandro Olivares high at the near post.

Luis Garcia would bring one back just a minute later when he got onto a bouncing ball in the box and slipped it past goalkeeper Armando Navarette.

Puebla's loss keeps them mired near the bottom of the table, with one point after three games.

Jonathan Bornstein made the bench for Tigres in their 2-1 loss to Toluca.

Puebla will next play on the road against Chiapas on January 28.
