Wellington Phoenix came up with another important win on Friday to stay in second place in the A-League as they defeated Adelaide United on the road at Hindmarsh Stadium.

American Alex Smith started and went the distance in defensive midfield for Wellington.

Adelaide started off strong as Dario Vidosic got behind the Wellington defense. Vidosic lost the ball in the box but it fell to Bruce Djite and American-born but Australian international fired home a low shot into the lower left corner for a 1-0 lead.

The lead only lasted for four minutes when in the 14h minute Wellington's Paul Ifill and Tim Brown exposed terrible Adelaide defending. Ifill had the ball on the left side completely unguarded. He then hit an easy pass to Brown who was also unguarded in the middle.

The New Zealand international made no mistake firing it past a helpless Adelaide keeper Eugene Galekovic to equalize the score at 1-1.

In the 38th minute Dani Sanchez put Wellington ahead for good when he headed home a Chris Greenacre cross to put the visitors on top 2-1.

Wellington have now won four straight and are only one point ahead of defending champions Brisbane for second place. They trail first place Central Coast by seven points.

The race for second place is very important as it guarantees a spot in the Final Series Playoffs.

Wellington's biggest game of the season will be Saturday, February 11 when they host Brisbane at Westpac stadium.
