Oguchi Onyewu suffered a knee injury in Sporting's victory over Paços de Ferreira while Tony Taylor and Caleb Patterson-Sewell each played their customary roles for Estoril and Atlético respectively.

Sporting CP 1 - 0 Paços de Ferreira

In the first league game under new coach Sá Pinto the Lions eked out a 1-0 win thanks to an 36th minute own-goal.

Oguchi Onyewu started alongside Anderson Polga in the center of defense but was replaced by Daniel Carriço in only the 27th minute because of a right knee problem.

The severity of Gooch's injury is scheduled to be evaluated on Monday.

Even without the former Clemson Tiger the hosts were able to secure all three points.

The only goal of the game came when a Stijn Schaars free kick deflected off Ricardo into his own net nine minutes before halftime.

Both teams had opportunities to score in the second half, including a penalty kick by Ricky van Wolfswinkel, but the goalkeepers on both ends produced strong performances.

Sporting remain tied for fourth place with Maritimo, 13 points behind league leaders Benfica.

They will next take the field on Thursday when they host the second leg of their Europa League clash with Legia Warsaw, after earning a 2-2 tie in Poland last week.

GD Estoril Praia 3 - 0 SC Freamunde

Tony Taylor entered in the 83rd minute of Estoril's comfortable victory over struggling Freamunde.

Two goals by Licá in the 33rd and 57th minutes paced Estoril to victory with Brazilian attacker Fabrício adding a third in the dying minutes.

Taylor replaced Licá, the Liga Orangina's leading scorer, with seven minutes remaining.

The win moves Estoril nine points clear at the top of the league standings with a visit to Oliveirense next up on Sunday.

CD Trofense 1 - 0 Atlético CP

Caleb Patterson -Sewell had another solid effort in net, but a feeble attack again condemned Atlético to defeat.

The game marks the fourth consecutive time the Lisbon club has been kept off the scoreboard.

Caleb, as he is known in Portugal, kept the visitors in the game with multiple strong saves, most notably denying Reguila in the 55th minute.

The Australian-American had no chance, however, when the veteran forward carved his way through the Atlético defense in the 62nd minute and buried his eighth goal of the season.

After spending several weeks atop the standings, Caleb and crew have dropped to eighth place with a game against Arouca looming on Sunday.
