BRIAN SCIARETTA - Tuesday, February 21, 2012
Sporting Lisbon today announced on its website that Oguchi Onyewu will require surgery for a torn ligament and meniscus in his right knee. The US international will be out of action for two months.

Onyewu suffered the injury over the weekend in Sporting's win over Pacos de Ferreira. Onyewu was subbed out of the game in the 27th minute

While the news is bad for Onyewu it is not devastating. It is not the same knee that he injured in 2009 during the World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica.

If his recovery goes according to schedule, Onyewu will be back in time for the beginning of World Cup qualifying in June.

Huge bummer for Gooch. He's been such a beast lately. Here's to a speedy recovery.
