CHRISTOPHER MCCOLLUM - Thursday, February 23, 2012
U.S. National Team coach Jurgen Klinsmann announced his 21 player roster that will travel to Genoa, Italy to face the Azzurri.

The roster isn't thick with surprises, as it was long expected to be a European-heavy roster with the addition of Landon Donovan and a couple of other players from the U.S. and Mexico.

The biggest surprise that will have National Team fans talking with a hint of excitement is Borussia Dortmund's Terrence Boyd, who was packing his bags to join the U-23 camp when he received the call from Klinsmann.

Boyd has been tearing up the U-23 ranks at Dortmund and has received strong praise from his manager, Jurgen Klopp. According to Klopp, Boyd is being groomed to take over a striker position in the future for the German giants.

With 10 players on the bench and six subs available, a lot of things will have to be going right for the 21 year old to see action, but with Jozy Altidore and Edson Buddle being the only other pure forwards on the roster, the opportunity may arise.

In total, there are 16 European based players on the roster, four from MLS, and Jose Torres from Mexico. After months of waiting, Klinsmann and fans will finally get to see Donovan and Clint Dempsey on the field at the same time, playing in the new possession, attack based system that Klinsmann is trying to implement.

Additionally, there will be some interesting position ideas available, as Timothy Chandler has been having a successful run at right wing for Nurnberg, and Fabian Johnson has been holding down the left back position for Hoffenheim recently.

Tim Howard (Everton),
Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake),
Brad Guzan (Aston Villa)

Carlos Bocanegra (Rangers),
Geoff Cameron (Houston Dynamo),
Timmy Chandler (Nürnberg),
Steve Cherundolo (Hannover 96),
Clarence Goodson (Brondby),
Michael Parkhurst (FC Nordsjaelland),
Jonathan Spector (Birmingham City)

Michael Bradley (Chievo Verona),
Maurice Edu (Rangers),
Fabian Johnson (Hoffenheim),
Jermaine Jones (Schalke 04),
Jose Torres (Pachuca),
Danny Williams (Hoffenheim)

Jozy Altidore (AZ Alkmaar),
Terrence Boyd (Borussia Dortmund),
Edson Buddle (LA Galaxy),
Clint Dempsey (Fulham),
Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy)

The game will take place on February 29 at 2:45PM EST, and will be televised by ESPN2 and 3, and Galavision.

Interesting selection and I'm glad Boyd is getting a chance to play. He has the potential to be the top striker since he is forward at a major club. The problems we have look like the same which are mainly having a solid defense. We need a good player pool for the back in the WC. We have multiple good players in mid field and pushing Donovan and Dempsey forward helps on the offense. Shea needs more development and Rogers isn't at the level. I can't want to see them play. If they continue from the Slovenia game it should be a good one.

How crazy would this be???

1.Klinsy should not take Olympic players now (Boyd).
2.Sasha deserves to be here.
3.Too many DMs (as usual).
4.Central defense is week.
5.Looking forward to see F.Johnson.

Would have preferred to see Kljestan instead of Torres, who too often slows and stymies the flow of play and attack for his own offense. Good to see Parkhurst selected, even if he's unlikely to start. Notice that Benny wasn't selected.

So if Boyd is really good enough for the senior team why is JK taking him away from the U-23 camp when Olympic qualifying is at stake for a friendly match where he might not even see the field. Do you think he is sending a message to Jozy????

People need to remember that this isn't necessarily a first choice lineup because a number of players are with the U-23 team as well.

Brek Shea is still young. He'll be back, unless he REALLY starts sucking when MLS begins.

Why no Kljestan is beyond me. Is his club playing a cup match or a crucial league game that day?

Mr. Jason, they tried the 4-3-2-1 and similar formations when Klinsmann first started, and it did very little. He applied a 4-4-2 and the U.S. scored goals. This is a stronger squad--probably the strongest Klinsmann has had together so far--but I'm skeptical that going back to that formation would bring anything different than it did before.

That being said, I agree with your projection if he goes for it, but I think Chandler could be pushed up to midfield, since that's what his club has been doing, and Spector or Cherundolo would take the right back spot(probably the former.

Will be interesting to watch.

@ Daniel wow really? Rogers?? He's pathetic at any position on the field, he's only good against weak teams...to add onto to that Lichaj is a defender not a midfielder, so is chandler...
Why did he bring in Spector and Goodson ?? They are not good consistent defenders! At least he finally brought in Boyd and Torres again.

I like the selections for the most part. I'm glad that JK sent Shea, Agudelo, & Bunbury with the U-23's to get some time/experience with the squad.
The defensive call-ups were to be expected after Gooch's injury and the latest Whitbread injury. Would have liked to have seen Lichaj called in to at least practice with the squad...but can understand leaving him at home to practice with AV.
Would like to see something like the following 4-1-3-2.....

Boyd for Buddle/Jozy
Jones for Badley
Cameron for Goodson
Williams for Chandler (Chandler for Dolo)
