EXTRA TIME
JOHN KRETLOW - Tuesday, March 27, 2012
The US was held to a draw by El Salvador, dramatically ending their Olympic dreams.

Deep into stoppage time, as the US was fixing to continue on into the knockout stage of the Olympic qualifying tournament, Jaime Alas found the back of the net passed American ‘keeper Sean Johnson.

Joe Corona gave the US a 2-1lead in the 68th minute after an impressive cross from Freddy Adu. Just three minutes earlier Terrence Boyd had tied the game, finishing off an Adu through ball.

The US started the game strong, as Boyd one timed a Brek Shea pass into the back of the net in the 3rd minute.

El Salvador though responded emphatically with two straight goals from Lester Blanco and Andres Flores.

After starting out the tournament with an emphatic win over Cuba, the US went on to lose to Canada in the second game of qualifying. This third and final first round game was essentially a must win for the US.

Canada and El Salvador reach the semifinals out of group A. They will find out their opponents after Tuesday's group B matchups.

@muchadu: Who is coach Roberts? Letget was hurt. Chandler and Altidore were not released by their clubs. Its not an excuse its a fact. If you dont get released you cant go. Its really as simple as that. Also there are no proven goalies at the U23 level. Actually there are few players anywhere that are U23 and are proven. Its a tourney like this where you find out which guys can step it up and become proven players some day. Also how is this JK's fault? By the way we tied El Salvador we didnt lose to them.

@muchadu What "experiment" are you referring to? This was a U23 game and we were limited in what players we could field. I'm thinking it was a fairly strong lineup all things considered. I'm a bit disappointed in how Kitchen played, but there isn't an overwhelming amount of choices given the age restriction.

Specifically, which players should we not have played, and which players would you have started instead?

This game was not a time to "EXPERIMENT" with new players. This was a golden opportunity to compete at a meaningful tournament. I am shocked and sickened at what team was put out on the field and the perfomance in the last two games of Olympic qualifiers. Clearly this should put to rest whether MLS caliber players should have the privilege of wearing the USMT colors. Shame on Coach Klinnsman and Coach Roberts for his pitiful performance. The Canada game was a travesty of a sham. This loss to El Salvador was the worst loss I have ever witnessed by any US soccer team....ever. Our coaching staff was not prepared to win with this incredible defensive meltdown. Those two goalee's should never see a USMT jersey again and the defense was sad and pathetic. Where was Altidore, Lletget, Chandler or a proven goalee when we needed them. I'm tired of the club team not letting them play excuse. This was our chance to place high in serious tourney. We threw it down the drain. The worst thing in life is wasted talent, and that is exactly what we did with the obvious talent on this team.
Freddy Adu's swan song was two assists at the end of the game to pull us one goal ahead, only to be destroyed by inexcusable defensive blunders.

to Greg - CP cannot be fired because this team (Olympic -2012) does not exist more.
People, who hired him should be fired!

It's not easy to fail as spectacularly as Porter did this week. Clearly he has his favorites and refused or didn't understand how to adjust tactics.
The 4-3-3 wasn't working and the likes of Kitchen, Opara, and Diskerund had terrible tournaments and looked totally overmatched. So in a must win game they all start again in a 4-3-3? Wow.
Finally Boyd got his chance and proved how great he was too late, why not Gyau? Ridiculous. Any other coach could have done as poorly as porter, huge set back for us soccer and a wasted chance to get some younger players Olympic experiences.
