RECAP: WEEKEND SWEDISH ACTION
RECAPS
EXTRA TIME
BRENDAN WIMBERLY - Monday, April 9, 2012
It was not a good weekend for Americans in Sweden as they tallied only one win, with Gregg Berhalter's Hammarby claiming the honor.

Trelleborg FF 1 - 1 Angelholm FF

Matt Pyzdrowski spent 90 minutes in net while Lester Dewee came on for Robin Staaf in the 86th minute as Angelholm started off the 2012 Superettan season with a draw against Trelleborg FF.

Pyzdrowski gave an extremely weak punch on a corner kick in the 15th minute which bounced off Robin Nilsson right to the feet of Kristian Haynes. The Trelleborg midfielder made no mistake with it, pulling the ball nicely onto his right foot and slotting it right past a sliding Pyzdrowski from close range.

Angelholm found an equalizer in the 53rd minute through Bjorn Westerblad. Ibrahim Koroma attempted to head a corner out of danger but Westerblad was waiting ten meters out. Westerblad took one touch to control the ball to his feet and snapped off a vicious left footed strike into the lower left corner of the net.

Dewee came on for Staaf in the 86th minute but could no affect the result of the game.

Angelholm are off until next Sunday when they host Varnamo in their first home match of the season.

Degerfors IF 1 - 3 Jonkopings Sodra IF

Brian Edwards' 2012 season got off to a disappointing start as Degerfors fell at home in a heavy defeat.

Jonkopings got off to a strong start with Branimir Hrgota netting in the 22nd minute. Hrgota blew past the Degerfors right back into the edge of the box and unleashed a wicked right footed shot past Edwards.

The second goal came just twelve minutes later with a bit of controversy. Jonkopings delivered a corner into the box which was nodded on by Andre Calisir. Andreas Tegstrom poked home the defenders deflection, which left Degerfors crying for an offside call. Nevertheless, the flag never went up and Jonkpings went into halftime with a 2-0 lead.

Degerfors started off the second half in a more attacking fashion, but weren't able to turn the tide. Hrgota struck again in the 85th minute. After receiving the ball Fredric Fendrich, Hrgota attacked the net from the right flank and fired into the side netting, putting the third goal passed Edwards.

Degerfors received a consolation goal in the 90th minute when Alexander Andersson hit a rocket into the back of the net, all but ending the game at it's final result of 3-1.

Edwards, Degerfors' 2011 Player of the Year, will look to improve on his three goals allowed while only making one save performance when he and Degerfors take on Ryan Miller and Halmstads Saturday.

Ljungskile SK 0 - 1 Osters IF

Both Patrick Hopkins and Steffen Vroom started and played the whole 90 minutes for Ljungskile.

After a slow first half which only forced one save between both goalies, Hopkins 56th minute miscue proved costly.

Freddy Soderberg coasted right past Hopkins and took a shot at net which end up slamming the post. The rebound fell to Hopkins' fellow defender Josemar, whose attempted clearance went straight to the waiting Dennis Velic who made no mistake on a gaping net to put the guests up 1-0.

Hopkins had a chance to redeem himself in the 67th minute, but his open header off a free kick missed the net entirely.

Vroom, though up top for the whole game, failed to make any considerable impact.

Both Hopkins and Vroom hope to perform better next Monday when they take on Jonkopings Sodra.

Hammarby IF 1 - 0 Halmstad BK

Former U.S. National Teamer Gregg Berhalter fielded Baggio Husidic in his starting 11 while bringing Billy Schuler on in the 90th minute to defeat Ryan Millers Halmstad.

Hammarby's win marks the first victory as well as the first game for an American manager in a fully professional European league.

The game got off to a scary start for Hammarby as Captain and number 10 Andreas Dahl went down in the fourth minute after a collision with Halmstads Peter Nystrom.

The injury proved a blessing in disguise however, as Dahls replacement Sebastian Bojassen scored the game winner in the 20th minute off a diving header. Mikael Rynell played a sublime in swinging cross from the right over the head of Richard Maygar to an unmarked Bojassen in the middle of the box. Bojassen dove for the ball and buried it into the bottom right corner from six meters out for the only score of the game.

Ryan Miller drew a Yellow card in the loss as the day belonged to Hammarby's American trio.

Berhalter and Hammarby will look to grab another three points next Monday when they take on Umea while Ryan Miller and Halmstad will look to grab their first points against Brian Edwards and Degefors.

Notes

Samuel Petrone failed to make the 18 while Mjallby drew Orebro 0-0 on Saturday.

Cobi Span is recovering from injury, and did not suit up on Sunday for Djurgarden's 1-0 win over GIF Sundsvall.

A big question for U.S. fans heading into the World Cup is surely on Jozy Altidore and just what is plaguing the young striker at Sunderland.
