RECAP: BIRMINGHAM VS. BLACKPOOL
JOHN KRETLOW - Thursday, May 10, 2012
Jonathan Spector and Birmingham City were knocked out of promotion contention as they went down to Blackpool on aggregate.
Birmingham City 2-2 Blackpool
Jonathan Spector and Birmingham City drew with Blackpool but lost on aggregate, ending their quest for Premier League glory.
Spector started and was taken out due to an apparent thigh injury in the 44th minute.
Blackpool won the first leg of the playoff by a 1-0 scoreline, meaning they went through winning 3-2.
The visiting team struck first with a Stephen Dobbie goal at the end of the first half, while Matthew Phillips doubled their lead in the 48th minute.
All seemed lost for Birmingham, but Nikola Zigic and Curtis Davies found the back of the net to level the game at two and bring them to within one goal on aggregate.
That was as close as the Blues would get though, as Blackpool moves on to take on West Ham United in the playoff final.
Zigic and Nathan Redmond were booked for Birmingham, while Neal Eardley and Gary Taylor-Fletcher saw yellow for Blackpool.
But I will say that Spector was solid coming in as a defensive sub in that Italy match, so I wish him well... and considering our defense is getting a mite bit long in the tooth now, well we really can't afford to toss away too many proven layers who are still under 30 years old.
