BRIAN SCIARETTA - Tuesday, May 15, 2012
US head coach Jurgen Klinsman today announced the first part of his roster for a series of upcoming friendlies and the beginning of World Cup qualifying.

The Roster includes just 16 players and only Kyle Beckerman and Nick Rimando being the only two MLS players

The roster included mostly European based players with additional names coming this Sunday. The total number of names during camp could be as high as 29 but only 23 are expected for the friendlies and World Cup qualifiers.

The lone newcomer to the team is Club Tijuana midfielder Joe Corona who recently played with the US U-23 team. He has never played been called up to the US national team before. Hertha Berlin's Alfredo Morales was called up to the US team last November but did not see any minutes.

The biggest omission on the roster is Sacha Kljestan who was a regular starter for Anderlecht who are coming off the Belgian title. Despite his club success, Kljestan has been unable to break into Klinsmann's plans for the team.

Also very noteworthy is that Timothy Chandler is also set to miss yet another round of international and Klinsman revealed that he spoke with Chandler at length and Chandler informed his coach that he wants to take a break from international soccer. Klinsmann said the door is not closed for Chandler but that the team will move forward without him.

The United States will next play Scotland in a friendly on May 26 in Jacksonville.

Not sure why there is so much love for Kljestan. He has never been impressive at the international level with exception if his three goals vs Swedes way back when. He is inconsistent at intl level. Gives up the ball and makes too many questonable decisions. He had olenty if chances to impress.

Regarding Chandler and all potential players with U.S. pedigree. If they are not "truly" American and have a desire to play for out motherland then good riddance. We will be fine without them. Dont underestimate our pool of talent which improves every year.

Reading over the comments by Klinsmann about Chandler, you could say that Chandler is done with the US for now. I think that path is closed for now. It's not a coincidence that he decides to decline the US invite with World Cup qualifying right around the corner.

Timmy, Timmy, Timmy. You're not THAT good, especially when Germany creates outside defenders for fun. Go ask Rossi how his Italy adventure worked out for him. Good riddance.

Klingsman: don't call Chandler again. We want players that are proud to represent the USA at any level.

My take on the first 1/2 of the roster...for the most part good selections. I have no real issues (yet) of the players called into what will be a 29 player camp, but the 2nd half of the call-ups will really reflect what we'll likely see once JK cuts it down to 23 players. Of those identified so far...I'm hoping that Beckerman does not make the 23 man squad. Like many others I feel that there are enought CDM's identified that we don't need Beckerman, who in my eyes is a "B" rank player at CDM, when compaired to the others (Jones, Bradley, Edu, Williams, Torres, Morales).
I fully expect Gooch (JK let slip in his interview with US Soccer), Boyd, (tweeted he was called up), Jozy, Donovan, Goodson, Ream, and Shea to all be part of the next Group. Probably Wondo & Gomez as well.
On the subject of Chandler....I'm of the opinion that he gets 1 last shot to be called in (9/11 Qualifier)...and if he doesn't except we move on until such time as either injuries or poor form sideline either Lichaj or Dolo. After the 9/11 match...if he hasn't accepted the call-up...we should move onto whatever other options we may have (D. William, A. Morales, Sheanon Williams, Alston, Sarkoki, Beltran, etc....). However, if Lichaj or Dolo see a decline and Chandler isn't tied to another country it would be difficult for The USMNT Coaching staff not to offer him another chance.

Chandler wasn't that impressive to cry over, but not going with Kljestan shows me why I wouldn't back Klinsmann much. He has no respect for american born players. Ask Donovan

Chandler does whatever his club tells him to do. His comments about wanting to play for the USA seem genuine. Though, it's entirely possible that his club is hoping Germany comes calling later; it would be a lot easier for them to lose Chandler to much more local German training camps than US ones. It would probably also give them a nice value bump in the transfer market too.

Looks like Chandler is going the German route. Big mistake, will be a fringe player for their team instead of a regular starter for the U.S. Good luck!

Tim chandler is making a big mistake! He probably will play for the German team because he is still eligible and probably never make a full start!! I hope he stays with out national team he's given us strength on the outside position on our weakly D... He'll probably like Rossi that decided to play with another national team and will sit on the bench for the next world cup
