KLINSMANN CALLS UP FIRST 16
RECAPS
EXTRA TIME
BRIAN SCIARETTA - Tuesday, May 15, 2012
US head coach Jurgen Klinsman today announced the first part of his roster for a series of upcoming friendlies and the beginning of World Cup qualifying.

The Roster includes just 16 players and only Kyle Beckerman and Nick Rimando being the only two MLS players

The roster included mostly European based players with additional names coming this Sunday. The total number of names during camp could be as high as 29 but only 23 are expected for the friendlies and World Cup qualifiers.

The lone newcomer to the team is Club Tijuana midfielder Joe Corona who recently played with the US U-23 team. He has never played been called up to the US national team before. Hertha Berlin's Alfredo Morales was called up to the US team last November but did not see any minutes.

The biggest omission on the roster is Sacha Kljestan who was a regular starter for Anderlecht who are coming off the Belgian title. Despite his club success, Kljestan has been unable to break into Klinsmann's plans for the team.

Also very noteworthy is that Timothy Chandler is also set to miss yet another round of international and Klinsman revealed that he spoke with Chandler at length and Chandler informed his coach that he wants to take a break from international soccer. Klinsmann said the door is not closed for Chandler but that the team will move forward without him.

The United States will next play Scotland in a friendly on May 26 in Jacksonville.

It was nice to know ya Timmy.

First time I saw you running up the flanks in Stars and Stripes, I had a feeling it would be short-lived...But I feel Lichaj will eventually fill that void well.

Glad Corona got a call-up.

And Beckerman? Enough already, bring in Sacha instead.

That's interesting about Tim Chandler. It doesn't give any time-table for a return. Just a "break from international soccer". I don't see how that's anything but bad news for the US.

Best case scenario is that he's just exhausted and will be available next time around. Worst case is that he wants to play for Germany.

Per Klinsmann:

On the exclusion of Timmy Chandler from the roster:
I have had long conversations with Timmy about where he is in his professional career and his commitment to playing international football. He has expressed his appreciation for all the opportunities we have given him, but he also feels at this point he needs to take a break. Its disappointing not having him as a part of the team at this important juncture of building our team, but ultimately a player must decide what is best for him. The door is certainly not closed on Timmy, but in the moment we move on without him.

Guess this kid just doesn't want to play for the Old US of A
