Michael Parkhurst and Nordsjaelland completed their remarkable fairytale season by defeating Horsens to win the Danish Superliga trophy and qualify for the Champions League group stages.
Nordsjaelland 3-0 Horsens
Michael Parkhurst and FC Nordsjaelland clinched their first ever Danish Superliga title on Wednesday with an impressive 3-0 win over Horsens.
Michael Parkhurst started and went the distance for Nordsjaelland at right back.
With Copenhagen facing a poor Silkeborg team at home, FCN would most likely need a win to secure the championship. Indeed they came out strong and dominated play. It wasn't until the closing moments of the first half when they would break through.
In the 45th minute, Mikkel Beckmann gave FCN the lead when he sent a rebound past Horsens keeper Fredrick Ronnow for a 1-0 lead that sent the crowd into delirium.
In the 82nd minute, Andreas Laudrup extended the lead when he converted a counterattack opportunity after Horsens was pushing forward. Laudrup's father, the former international great Michael Laudrup, was looking on from the stands.
In the 87th minute, Andreas Bjelland put the game out of reach and secured the title when took a pass from Tobias Mikkelsen and sent it past Ronnow.
With the win, Nordsjaelland will advance to the group stages of the Champions League. It is a remarkable achievement for the small club who have the third smallest budget in the Superliga.
Michael Parkhurst was a steady performer all season and he will now report to US national team camp for a series of games that will include the start of World Cup qualifying.
