After a successful first season in the A-League, American forward/midfielder Alex Smith has signed a new one year contract with Wellington.

Smith, 26, signed last season with Gold Coast United but was controversially released.

Shortly after Smith was picked up by Wellington Phoenix and was a key part of the team that qualified for the playoffs. Wellington won their first playoff series against Sydney but eventually fell in extra time to Perth Glory in the second round.

After being forced to leave college early at SMU after accidentally losing his NCAA eligibility, Smith attempted to join MLS with FC Dallas. That did not work out for him and eventually moved to Australia. He will now be part of the league's only New Zealand-based club for a second season.
