BRIAN SCIARETTA - Wednesday, June 27, 2012
The draw for the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League was held today and three Americans were included.

First, American winger Josh Gatt and Norwegian champions Molde FK will take on Latvian Champions, FK Ventspils.

Bryan Gerzicich and Hapoel Kiryat Shmona stunned Israeli soccer last season in winning their first ever Israeli Premier League title. The small club that plays on the Israeli-Lebanon boarder will face Slovakian champions MSK Zilina in their second round Champions League qualifier

Finally, 20 year old American forward Danijal Brkovic recently signed a two year deal with Bosnian Premier League champions FK Zeljeznicar after playing two seasons with fellow Bosnian club Velez Mostar. Today, FK Zeljeznicar drew NK Maribor in their second round Champions League qualifying matchup.

The first leg of these second round games will be played on the 17/18 of July. The second leg will be played on July 24/25.

These three players are not the only Americans in the Champions League. Sacha Kljestan and Anderlecht will begin playing in the third qualifying round. Jermaine Jones and Schalke along with Michael Parkhurst and Nordsjaelland will begin play in the group stages.

Any shot that Bryan Gerzicich will move to a bigger European league after his big season?

Red: The Danish superliga is rated higher than the Belgian league. This because their teams has had more success in Europe. Remember, FC Copenhagen came second in their group in Champions League a couple years ago. Tying with FC Barcelona in a group-match as an highlight. The Belgian league isn't as good as it was in the past.

I believe Dani (Danijal) Brkovic had all the interest to play for the US; but in the 3 years since he has finished HS in Johnson City (outside Binghamton NY ) not one American coach has approached him with a an offer to play pro ball. As I have written before; we are very late in recognizing talent( others will have to discover talent before we aknowlege it (very sad state of affairs)) and now Dani is playing for the top team in Bosnia and incidentally he scored 2 goals for them in their last friendly. I can only pray that one day Dani and Boyd will be the starting forwards for the NT. The NT is quickly becoming an aged team that will not compete at the World Cup level. Christian from Binghamton

So Nordsjaelland goes right to the group stages but Anderlecht, who won the Belgian league have to go into a playoff round?!?! That doesn't sound fair!! Which league is rated as the better one?

I hope Gatt and Molde can get into the UCL group stages and he can show his talent to the world. That may get him a move to a bigger club and league.

How much interest does Brkovic have in playing for the US? Any idea...?
