JOHN KRETLOW - Friday, September 14, 2012
Geoff Cameron and Maurice Edu look to help Stoke City notch a win over defending Premier League champions' Manchester City, while Eric Lichaj, Brad Guzan, and Aston Villa take on high flying Swansea City.
Stoke City - Manchester City
Geoff Cameron, Maurice Edu, and Stoke City host Premier League powerhouse Manchester City at the Britannia Stadium on Saturday.
Both Americans were on international duty with the US national team but should be available this weekend. Cameron is likely to start in the midfield for the Potters, while Edu looks to start on the bench.
Stoke gets back to action after last weekend's international break and they hope the rest will boost them to their first win of the season. The Potters have only managed three draws in the young season thus far.
Manchester City has won two out of their first three league games this season, having tied Liverpool in the game they did not win. They hope to garner three points on Saturday, though they were only able to manage a draw in their last trip to Stoke.
City look to be without Sergio Agüero, Mario Balotelli, Gareth Barry, and Micah Richards. Jamie Ness and Mamady Sidibé look to miss for the Potters, while Matthew Etherington could come back from injury on Saturday.
Stoke's newly signed Michael Owen may see his first minutes this weekend.
Aston Villa - Swansea City
Eric Lichaj and Brad Guzan look to push Aston Villa to their first victory of the season as they take on Swansea City at home on Saturday.
Lichaj and Guzan both featured in Villa's draw with Newcastle United and should be in the starting eleven this weekend.
The Villains have only garnered one point after three games this season, and although it may be too early for fans to panic, they hope to start getting results soon.
Swansea has started the season on fire, having won two out of their first three games this season. They have scored ten goals and only conceded two in the young season.
Marc Albrighton and Richard Dunne look to miss for Villa, while Neil Taylor is injured for Swansea. Jose Flores Moreno is suspended for the match.
Reading - Tottenham Hotspur
Brad Friedel, Clint Dempsey, and Tottenham Hotspur travel to take on Reading on Sunday.
Friedel is the likely starter at goal for Spurs, while this weekend's game could be Dempsey's first for his new team.
Tottenham has not started out the season strong, as they have not been victorious in three games. Amid their new signings they hope to upstart their season and climb up the standings.
Reading's return to the Premier League has been rough thus far. In two games they have managed just one point. They hope to get their campaign on track with a win at home this weekend.
Scott Parker and Younes Kaboul are injured and will not feature for Spurs. Jimmy Kébé, Hal Robson-Kanu, and Jason Roberts are doubtful for Reading.
Everton - Newcastle United
Tim Howard returns to club duty as Everton hosts Newcastle United at Goodison Park on Monday.
After helping guide the US national team to a win in Tuesday's game against Jamaica, Howard will be at goal for the Toffees.
Everton hopes to get back to winning ways on Monday, as they lost their last game to West Bromwich Albion after having won their first two games of the season. They hope the international break and the friendly confines of Goodison Park will lead them to victory.
Newcastle has not won since their opening weekend game against Tottenham. Since that victory they have lost to Chelsea and drawn with Aston Villa. Expectations are up after a strong last season, so they hope to get back to winning ways against the Toffees.
Darron Gibson and Steven Pienaar are injured and should miss for Everton. Newcastle's Danny Simpson looks to be another week away from coming back from a hamstring injury and should miss Monday's match.
Nottingham Forest - Birmingham City
Jonathan Spector, Will Packwood, and Birmingham City travel to take on Robbie Findley's Nottingham Forest.
Spector is likely to start, while Packwood looks to be on the bench at the start of the game. Findley is not likely to feature for Nottingham Forest.
After starting the season with a three game winless skid, Birmingham City finally notched a win in their last game against Peterborough United.
Forest has started out the season strong, having gone unbeaten in their four games thus far.
The Blues could be without Stephen Carr, Darren Ambrose, Curtis Davies, Keith Fahey, and Nikola Zigic.
Middlesbrough - Ipswich Town
Seb Hines and Middlesbrough host Ipswich Town as the Championship gets back in action.
Hines started out the season with an injury, but has gotten back to fitness and should be in the lineup this weekend.
Boro is coming off a loss to Millwall on the road and they hope returning home, where they are unbeaten this season, can help them get back to winning ways.
Ipswich has had an inconsistent season thus far. Just three weeks ago they lost big to Blackpool on a 6-0 scoreline, though they were able to come back the next week and manage a draw to Huddersfield.
Boro's captain Rhys Williams has damaged ankle ligaments and is out 3-4 months.
Bolton Wanderers - Watford
Tim Ream and Bolton Wanderers host Watford at the Reebok Stadium this weekend.
Ream has had inconsistent playing time this season but could see the starting lineup on Saturday.
Bolton has only managed one win in their first four games this season. They are currently close to the bottom of the standings and need to start winning games if they want to challenge for promotion.
Watford is in the middle of the standings, but they are coming off a big loss to Derby County. The Watford defense gave up 5 goals in that game and will need to be sharper if they want to get back to winning ways.
Bolton's David Ngog has returned to fitness and could feature this weekend. Stuart Holden continues to rehab his knee and will miss once again for Bolton.
Carlisle United - Swindon Town
Frank Simek and Carlisle United host Swindon Town in League One action.
Simek is likely to see the field for the Cumbrians.
Carlisle has won two of their last three games and will be gunning to continue their strong streak.
Swindon Town has been struggling of late, having lost three straight games in all competitions. Both teams are tied in points and in 7th place in the standings. Town are hoping they can get back to winning ways and distance themselves from the Cumbrians.
Shrewsbury Town - Scunthorpe United
Mike Grella and Scunthorpe United take on Shrewsbury Town this weekend.
Grella has been a regular starter this season and should be in the starting lineup on Saturday.
The American forward has scored one of the two goals Scunthorpe has notched this season, though the Iron will have to start finding the back of the net more if they want to improve in the standings. Scunthorpe is currently winless in the young season.
Shrewsbury has only won one game in five this season and also in deep need of three points. They are coming off a loss to Notts County last weekend.
Cody Cropper is not likely to eature in Southampton's game against Arsenal.
Zak Whitbread and Leicester City travel to play Wolverhampton on Sunday.
Conor Doyle hopes to see the field in Derby County's game against Huddersfield Town.
Robbie Rogers hopes to make the game day lineup in Stevenage's game against Crewe Alexandria.
John Paul Pittman hopes to see the field in Oxford United's game against Burton Albion in League Two play.
