DAVID SMITH - Thursday, October 4, 2012
Michael Parkhurst and Nordsjaelland were no match for defending European champions Chelsea, while an injury kept Jermaine Jones out of Schalke's draw with Montpellier.

FC Nordsjaelland 0 - 4 Chelsea FC

Michael Parkhurst went the distance on the right side of Nordsjaelland's defense, as the Wild Tigers kept the game close for just over 80 minutes, but suffered a late thrashing at home to Chelsea.

Chelsea was happy to sit back and absorb the pressure applied by the plucky Danes while waiting for the chance to hit them on the counter, and successfully grabbed the lead three minutes past the half-hour.

Enoch Adu lost possession in Nordsjaelland territory to Fernando Torres. The Spaniard shifted the ball to Frank Lampard, who hit a smart pass through the defense for Juan Mata to put away from eight yards.

The hosts kept the pressure strong in search of an equalizer, and while outmatched by the English team, they did their part to generate a fast-paced spectacle before the floodgates opened in the finale.

With 11 minutes left on the clock, a Parkhurst foul on Torres from 22 yards out set up David Luiz for an untouchable free kick to the right side, then Mata got on the end of a series of passes in the Nordsjaelland box to stroke his second of the game.

Then in the final moments of regulation, Ramires was waiting directly in front of the open net to side-foot home a short cross from Oscar, finishing the rout.

The loss leaves Nordsjaelland at the bottom of group E on zero points. Next up in the Champions League is a pair of games against Juventus, the first in Copenhagen on October 23, and the following taking place two weeks later in Turin.

Beforehand, they will try to solidify their position in the Superliga standings, as they visit Odense on Friday evening.

RSC Anderlecht - Malaga CF

Sacha Kljestan was a halftime substitute for Anderlecht on Wednesday evening for their showdown with Malaga, as a trio of goals from their Spanish visitors left them without a win in Group C.

Malaga defender Oguchi Onyewu was not selected for the gameday roster, and is still awaiting his competitive debut for the team.

Eliseu opened the scoring for Malaga in first half injury time when he pounced on a loose ball near Anderlecht's penalty area and put his volley it upper corner, then Joaquin struck from the spot after Cheikhou Kouyaté fouled Nacho Monreal in the area after 56 minutes.

Then Eliseu added his second of the evening in the 64th with a stylish flick over keeper Silvio Proto to complete the victory.

Mike Adubato will file his Press Box Report shortly.

Notes

Jermaine Jones picked up a slight ankle injury during the week in training, and was out of the lineup on Wednesday for Schalke's 2-2 home draw against Montpellier.

A big question for U.S. fans heading into the World Cup is surely on Jozy Altidore and just what is plaguing the young striker at Sunderland.
