US TO HOST 2012 OLYMPIC QUALIFIERS
US will host CONCACAF qualifiers
Over the weekend, the United States was awarded the rights to host the CONCACAF World Cup qualifying tournament for the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England.
It is uncertain at this moment what type of format will be used but in previous years the format included two groups of four teams.
The top two teams from each group would then advance into the semifinals and the winners of each of the semifinal games advanced.
This will mark the third time in the previous four Olympics that the US has hosted the tournament.
In 2000 the tournament was held in Hershey, Pennsylvania and in 2008 the tournament was held in various locations with the final series of matches held in Nashville, Tennessee.
In 2004, the tournament was held in Mexico and the US was eliminated by Mexico in the semifinal game 4-0 despite having been undefeated in group play.
The CONCACAF qualification tournament for the 2012 games will take place in March of that year at locations to be determined.
