After spending two seasons in Sweden, midfielder Michael Thomas is returning home and will play in the MLS

The Olathe, Kansas native signed with Sporting Kansas City, according to a statement released by the team.

Originally drafted by San Jose with the 19th pick in the second round of the 2010 MLS SuperDraft, Thomas spent half of the 2010 season playing for Halmstads BK of the Allsvenskan, Sweden's top division. He switched to Ljungskile SK of the Superettan, Sweden's second division, for a year and a half.

The former Notre Dame Fighting Irish recorded 49 appearances for Ljungskile, starting 27 league matches last year alone. He scored eight goals for the second-tier club over his two seasons in Sweden.

Thomas had a successful career at Notre Dame. He appeared in 83 matches in four years, starting 81, while tallying 19 goals and 13 assists.
