The United States under-20 national team defeated Jamaica 2-1 on Sunday in their first tune-up friendly ahead of World Cup qualifying.

The American goals were scored by Los Angeles Galaxy forward Jose Villarreal and Santos Laguna midfielder Benji Joya. Both players are expected to be important parts of the team in World Cup qualifying and beyond should the team advance to the World Cup.

For World Cup qualifying, the United States was drawn into Group A along with Costa Rica and Haiti with the top two teams from each group advancing. Should the US team advance, they will face one of the teams from Group B which consists of Canada, Cuba, and Nicaragua in the quarterfinals.

Under the CONCACAF format, the winners of the sudden death quarterfinal games advance to the World Cup.

The US will open World Cup qualifying on February 18 against Haiti.
