AMERICAN TRIO WINS 3. LIGA TITLE
Chris Richards contributed hugely to Bayern Munich II's 3. Liga success
KENYA BROWN - Saturday, July 4, 2020
Taylor Booth, Malik Tillman, and Chris Richards capped off their season with Bayern Munich II as champions.

Saturday was a day of celebrations for Bayern Munich as the first team topped off their season with the German Cup. Meanwhile, in Kaiserslautern, the reserves brought more good news to the organization as they finished on top of the mountain to win the 3. Liga title.

Despite going down in a 1-0 defeat to Kaiserslautern, results elsewhere went their way. Wurzburger Kickers could only muster tie with Hallescher FC while Eintracht Braunschweig lost to Meppen. The title win marks the best finish for Bayern Munich in the league since its inception in 2008-2009. It also marks the highest finish for a reserve team.

Many players contributed to Bayern Munich II's success this season. Most notable of the three Americans is Richards as he played in 30 games for the team at center-back and contributed four goals. His performances in the third tier did not go unnoticed by Bayern's first-team coaching staff and he was brought to play in one game in June.

Whether the 20-year-old will be promoted to the first team on a permanent basis is anyone's guess. But playing another season in the third division will not be beneficial to his development. So it will be interesting to see what Bayern has in store for him next season.

Tillman, 18, had to be the surprise player in the second half of the 3. Liga season. Having played primarily with the Under-19 team before being promoted to the reserves, he hit the ground running and finished the season with five goals from eight games. He has shown throughout the season how much of talent he can be in the attack. Judging from his recent performances, there will be high expectations of him in the next season. While he has played recently for the German youth national teams, the younger brother of Timothy Tillman U.S. Soccer must keep him on their radar.

While he did not play many games for Bayern II, Booth has shown that he could be a major contributor to this team later on. The five assists that the former Real Salt Lake Academy player registered with the Under-19s showed he has the potential to become a breakout a player for them if he continues to develop.

Winning the 3. Liga is a monumental achievement for Bayern Munich II. While they cannot be promoted to the 2. Bundesliga as rules in Germany prevent reserve teams from moving up any higher, they will certainly work to retain their crown when the 2020-2021 season rolls around.
