Portugal welcomes another young yank
BRIAN SCIARETTA - Wednesday, January 6, 2010
Sources have told YA that USA defender Gale Agbossoumonde is on the verge of signing a deal with Portugese club Sporting Braga. While the deal has not been completely finalized, the parties remain close. At this time it is unclear if the pending deal is a loan or a full transfer.

YA has also been able to confirm that Agbossoumonde, 18, has been training with Sporting Braga since December 28, 2009. Sporting Braga are currently tied with Benfica for first place in the Portuguese Liga table. Both clubs have 33 points through 14 games.

The togo born Agbossoumonde is widely regarded as one of the more promising youth players in the American system. In August 2009, Agbossoumonde signed with the Brazilian based sports management company, Traffic Sports. The following month, he started every game for the USA in the 2009 U20 World Cup . While the USA failed to advance out of group play in that tournament, Agbossoumonde was clearly one of the best players on the team.

Last month USA U20 head coach Thomas Rongen selected Agbossoumonde to play in the first U20 camp of the 2011 U20 cycle. He will likely be one of the key players for this team as it builds towards the next World Cup in Colombia.
