BRIAN SCIARETTA - Sunday, March 10, 2013
In the first game following the long Russian Premier League winter break, FC Rostov played to a 0-0 draw with Alania Valdikavkaz.

Rostov's American forward Eugene Starikov came on in the 63rd minute for the visitors when he replaced Danko Lazovic.

The game was one of the more controversial games of the season in Russia as the officiating was a mess.

In the 60th minute it appeared that Alexandru Gatcan gave Rostov a lead off a free kick but it was waived off when the referee determined it was a handball. Replays later determined it cleanly came off Gatcan's knee.

Also in the game, Alania were denied two obvious penalities with the most blatant coming on a challenge from Rostov's Alexander Sheshukov on Alania's Brazilian midfielder Rudnei.

In the end, both team are disappointed with the draw but for Alania, the result is a missed opportunity as the club remain in last place in the league are in jeopardy of being relegated. The club sits four points from the relegation playoff zone and five points from complete safety.

FK Rostov remain in 11th place and have a 10 point gap separating it from 10th place.

Rostov return home to take on 13th place Volga on Friday at Stadion Olimp 2.
