BOCANEGRA JOINS CHIVAS USA
Former US national team captain Carlos Bocanegra has signed in MLS today and will play for Chivas USA.
Bocanegra, 34, began his professional career in MLS with the Chicago Fire but left for Fulham in the English Premier League in 2004. He spent nearly a decade in Europe playing for Fulham, Rennes, Saint-Etienne, Rangers, and Racing Santander.
His last two years have been spent with club mired in financial difficulties. In 2011/12, Rangers were hit with a financial scandal what resulted in the prestigious Scottish club sent to the fourth tier of the Scottish system.
This past season he played for Racing Santander of Spain's Segunda but poor finances of the club played a factor in its recent relegation.
Now he will head to Chivas USA who are in last place in the MLS's Western Conference and have the worst attendance of the league.
Chivas USA director of communications Cristina Maillo confirmed the acquisition to YA, "He has joined us."
Chivas USA were able to acquire Bocanegra in a deal with Toronto FC who held the first pick in the allocation draft. In exchange for the pick, Chivas USA sent Toronto its 2015 1st Round SuperDraft pick and an international roster spot through 2014.
Bocanegra will likely make his Chivas debut it its road game against Philadelphia on July 12.
