RECAP: WEEKEND MEXICAN ACTION
Michael Orozco scored his first goal of the season as Puebla falls, Club Tijuana concedes late to draw with Santos Laguna and Tigres gives up two goal lead and settles for one point in a busy weekend of Liga MX.
Club Tijuana 1 - 1 Santos Laguna
Edgar Castillo was the only American to start in Tijuana's matchup with Santos Laguna on Friday evening. Gregory Garza, Joe Corona and Paul Arriola all made the 18 but only Arriola made an appearance from the bench.
Francisco Martínez put the hosts on top in the 47th minute and the Xolos appeared to be in line for three points and about to hand Santos their first loss of the season.
However, Santos' continued offensive pressure finally yielded a breakthrough. Jesus Escoboza scored his first goal of the season in the 89th minute and guaranteed a share of the points at the Estadio Caliente.
Arriola replaced Dario Benedetto at halftime, who was questionable after missing several matches with a leg injury.
Club Tijuana continues Champions League play when they host El Salvador's Firpa on Wednesday. The two teams drew 0-0 in El Salvador earlier this month in the first match of group play.
Tigres 2 - 2 Chiapas
Jose Torres started and played 90 minutes as Tigres and Chiapas shared the points on Saturday.
It was a tale of two halves on Saturday night at the Estadio Universitario and certainly a disappointing turn of events for Tigres.
Damian Álvarez put Tigres ahead in just the 15th minute when he was left unmarked after a counterattack and nifty passing left alone in the box, where he converted the cross easily. Alan Pulido scored Tigres' second in similar fashion in the 42nd minute, just five minutes after he entered the match.
The Jaguars would regroup at half time and make an essential adjustment. Mauricio Romero entered the match at halftime and had an immediate impact. In the 69th minute, he leapt above his defender and headed in a cross past Sergio Garcia, who was unable to reach it.
Then in the waning moments of the match, Romero made a spectacular play to ensure Chiapas would rescue a point from the match. A long ball was sent over top of several defenders and Romero remained barely onsides. Running stride by stride at the edge of the box, he lofted a ball past Garcia, who had come out to intercept the bouncing ball. Romero lofted it over him so quickly, he didn't have time to react and Tigres fans left disappointed.
Tigres next face off with Zacatepec on Wednesday in Copa MX play.
Cruz Azul 2 - 1 Puebla
DaMarcus Beasley and Michael Orozco both went 90 minutes for La Franja as they fell to Cruz Azul Sunday afternoon at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc.
Orozco put Puebla in front in the 27th minute when he headed in a free kick for his first goal of the young season. Again, however, this match had two distinct halves.
In the second half, Cruz Azul continued pressure on La Franja's defense and eventually got their breakthrough in the 80th minute when a wide open Mariano Pavone headed a cross past Jorge Villalpando.
In the 88th minute, Joao Rojas scored the winner for Azul and maybe the goal of the year so far in the 2013 Apertura.
He received a ball on the end line about five yards from goal with defender Jonathan Laserda right with him. Rojas dribbled the ball as if he were going toward the six yard box and sharply cut the ball back onto the other foot and faking out Laserda and Villalpanda and eased the ball into the far side netting for a 2-1 lead.
It was a spectacular display of individual footwork and ruined Puebla's afternoon. La Franja next face off with Correcaminos UAT in Copa MX action on Tuesday.
Adrian Ruelas did not make the 18 as Veracruz fell 3-1 to Toluca.
Alfonso Hernández made the 18 but didn't play as Monterrey fell 3-1 to León.
Ventura Alvarado did not make the 18 as Necaxa drew with Estudiantes Tecos on Friday night.
