PREVIEW: WEEKEND MEXICAN ACTION
Tigres visit Veracruz, Tijuana travels to Chiapas and Puebla host Atlante in week eight of Apertura play in Mexico
Tigres - Veracruz
Jose Torres played 90 minute last week as Tigres ruined a two goal lead and settled for a draw at home to Chiapas. The disappointing start to the season continued as Mauricio Romero scored twice in the second half and Tigres fell to 13th place in Liga MX.
The bright spot for Tigres at the moment is most certainly Alan Pulido, the 22 year old attacker who has scored four goals in six matches and already tying his season total from last season.
Veracruz started off well but have struggled over their last three games-two scoreless draws and a 3-1 loss at Toluca last week. Despite the loss, the Red Sharks are currently in seventh place through seven matches.
Tigres will be without Argentine striker Emanuel Villa, who suffered a thigh muscle injury in last week's match with Chiapas.
Veracruz will be missing defender Leiton Jiménez and midfielder Israel Martinez, who are both recovering from injury. Adrian Ruelas has yet to make an appearance with the Red Sharks this season.
Club Tijuana - Chiapas
The Xolos will travel to Chiapas to take on the Jaguars on Saturday night.
Tijuana is coming off a 1-0 win versus Firpo in Champions League play on Wednesday, which leaves them in firm control of Group 7. Last week, they settled for a draw with Santos Laguna after giving up a disappointing 89th minute goal on their home turf.
The only American not to see action in the win over Firpo was Edgar Castillo, who was an unused sub Wednesday night and figures to start this weekend. Joe Corona and Paul Arriola have started recently while Gregory Garza as been mostly used as a substitute as of late.
Chiapas, as noted above, came back and tied Tigres last week but have only won one match all season, a 4-2 win over Puebla on August 3rd. However, other than a 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Toluca, the Jaguars have drawn five of their seven matches this season and are tied with the Xolos with eight points.
The Jaguars are lead by veteran striker Carlos Ochoa, who has four goals this season and Avilés Hurtado, who has three. Chiapas have not announced any injuries ahead of Saturday's match.
The Xolos are still without US striker Herculez Gomez and may also miss Argentine striker Dario Benedetto, who has not fully recovered since sustaining a leg injury several weeks ago.
Puebla - Atlante
DaMarcus Beasley, Michael Orozco and Puebla will attempt to rebound after falling to Cruz Azul last week at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc. The match was bittersweet for Orozco, who socred his first goal of the season off a corner kick but La Franja were unable to hold off Cruz Azul, who scored in the 80th and 88th minute to get the road victory.
Atlante are in last place in Liga MX and have only managed two points in seven games, scoring only six goals in the process. Puebla will look to keep them winless in new manager Rubén Omar Romano's third match in charge.
Puebla are currently in 12th place in the league but have only won once so far in the Apertura.
Both teams come into the match at full strength and Atlante have signed Roberto Nanni, the veteran Argentine striker, who scored in his team debut last week.
Benji Joya, Daniel Cuevas and Santos Laguna face Querétaro on Saturday.
Alonso Hernandez and Monterrey host Atlas.
Ventura Alvarado and Necaxa host Mérida on Friday night.
