Freddy Adu enjoyed his first start in Brazil, going 70 minutes in Bahia's tie with Portuguesa in the Copa Sudamericana.

Bahia 0-0 Portuguesa

After winning the first leg 2-1 on the road, Bahia knew a tie or even a 1-0 defeat would still see them through to the Round of 16.

With that in mind Cristovao Borges rested several first teamers, giving Adu his first opportunity for extended playing time.

The 24 year old American began on the left side of midfield but swapped to the right wing on more than one occasion. In his 70 minutes of action Adu played simply and effectively, if unremarkably.

Adu combined well with Anderson Talisca in the tenth minute to create Bahia's first dangerous scoring chance, and also took charge of the host's corner kicks throughout.

He left to a round of applause from the small home crowd after suffering from cramps and being replaced by Potita in the 70th minute.

The aggregate victory sends Bahia to the Round of 16 where they will be underdogs to Colombian powerhouse Atletico Nacional.

Bahia and Portuguesa actually will meet again for a league game on Saturday, just three days after their Copa Sudamericana matchup.
