GAITAN SIGNS WITH OFI
After training with clubs in the United States, Italy, and Argentina in recent years, American midfielder Nicholas Gaitan has signed with OFI Crete of the Superleague in Greece
Gaitan, 18, trained with Nocerina in Italy last season after the club was relegated from Serie B. After the season, Nocerina offered Gaitan a contract but the American midfielder passed feeling he could do better.
This summer, Gaitan returned from Italy to New York and joined his father's U.S. Soccer Development Academy club, Albertson SC, in the middle of their run to the Development Academy Finals in Houston in July, where they finished in third place. The day after the tournament Nick left for Greece to join OFI's preseason training.
In his youth career he has played primarily as a box-to-box holding midfielder but OFI has been experimenting with playing Gaitan as a central-attacking "number 10" role.
He holds passports for the United States, Argentina, and Portugal but has played with the U.S U-14s, U-15s, U-17s, and U-18s.
"Nicholas has been with OFI for about five weeks now, training and playing in friendly matches with OFI's first team and Under-20 team," Gaitan's agent Ted Philipakos told YA. "He's set to start the season playing with the U-20s, and we're optimistic that he will be able to break into the first team soon enough. At the moment, though, we're still waiting on the ITC."
