RECAP: WEEKEND MEXICAN ACTION
Club Tijuana was held to scoreless draw on the road and Puebla picked up three valuable points at home.
Club Tijuana 0 - 0 Toluca
Tijuana could not take advantage of Toluca going down to 10 men in the 33rd minute and are still searching for their first road win of the season.
Edgar Castillo and Paul Arriola started for the visiting Xolos while Herculez Gomez, Gregory Garza and Joe Corona made the bench. Gomez entered for Arriola in the 68th minute while Garza replaced Dario Benedetto in the 81st.
Toluca's Gerardo Rodríguez picked up a straight red card in the 33rd minute for a dangerous foul but the Xolos were unable to take advantage while Toluca.
The draw leaves Tijuana in a disappointing 12th place in the 2013 Apertura. They'll welcome Jose Torres and Tigres to the Estadio Caliente on Friday night. Toluca drops into fourth place with the tie and faces Comunicaciones in Champions League play on Wednesday.
Puebla 2 - Atlas 0
Michael Orozco started and played 90 minutes as Puebla picked up a solid home win over 17th place Atlas on Sunday afternoon. DaMarcus Beasley did not make the 18.
An Atlas turnover in midfield gave La Franja the lead when Carlos Sánchez beat the defense and was left alone with the goalkeeper. Atlas keeper Miguel Pinto did get a glove on the breakaway shot but only deflected it into the side netting and Puebla went up early in the match.
There wasn't much the Chilean shot stopper could do about Puebla's second goal earlier. Initially, Pinto made a good save to deny a second goal but Atlas were unable to clear the ball. It fell to Sánchez at the edge of the box and rather than shooting, he found an unmarked Luis Miguel Noriega, who trapped the ball and calmly hit it into the back of the net.
Puebla bounced back after the loss to León two weeks ago and are now in eighth place. However, it doesn't get any easier for La Franja as they travel to league leader's América next week.
Neither Daniel Cuevas or Benji Joya made the 18 as Santos Laguna beat Monterrey 3-2 on Friday. Alonso Hernandez didn't make the 18 for Monterrey either.
Jose Torres was suspended due to a red card as Tigres beat Atlante 3-1.
Ventura Alvarado played 53 minutes as Necaxa drew 2-2 with Correcaminos UAT.
