RECAP: GIL VICENTE 5 - 0 CALDAS
Caleb Patterson-Sewell enjoyed a rare start as Gil Vicente easily dispatched lower division Caldas in the Portuguese Cup.
Gil Vicente 5-0 Caldas
In just his second start of the season, both of which have come in cup games, Patterson-Sewell earned a shutout, albeit against an overmatched opponent.
Despite entering the game as heavy favorites Gil Vicente nearly created an early deficit for themselves when Eder was whistled for a handball in the box in only the tenth minute.
Luckily for Patterson-Sewell and company Telmo sent his penalty kick off target, not even forcing a save from the former New York Red Bull.
Caldas managed to keep Gil Vicente off the board until first half stoppage time, but Diogo Viana's goal just before the interval gave the hosts the lead.
The third division side could not keep up in the second half and Gil Vicente added four more goals.
Danielson tallied in the 73rd minute, followed by Georgian striker Avtandil Ebralidze in the 77th. Joao Vilela then iced the game with two penalties in the 82nd and 85th minutes, sending the hosts through to the fourth round of the Portuguese Cup.
Gil Vicente will next take on Rio Ave in a league game on 10/26, though it is likely Patterson-Sewell will return to the bench with Adriano returning to his customary starting position.
Gil Vicente have been impressive in the league, climbing into the top half of the standings through seven games, with their only two losses coming against powerhouses Porto and Benfica.
