KLINSMANN NAMES 23 FOR BRAZIL
KENYA BROWN - Thursday, May 22, 2014
United States national team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann unveiled his 23-man roster for the 2014 FIFA World Cup on Thursday, with Landon Donovan being the most notable name excluded from the list.

U.S. Soccer made the announcement of the team on their official Twitter page.

Other players not heading to Brazil next month are defenders Michael Parkhurst, Brad Evans, and Clarence Goodson; midfielders Joe Corona and Maurice Edu; and forward Terrence Boyd.

The long-serving U.S. forward went on to Facebook later in the day to express his disappointment with the decision.

"To my fans, it has been an honor and privilege to have represented the US National Team in three World Cups," he said. "I was looking forward to playing in Brazil and, as you can imagine, I am very disappointed with today's decision. Regardless, I will be cheering on my friends and teammates this summer, and I remain committed to helping grow soccer in the US in the years to come."

Despite the tough decision on not selecting Donovan to participate in his fourth World Cup, Klinsmann was upbeat about the team he selected for this summer's tournament.

"It's an exciting moment when you have narrowed the roster down as a coaching staff, and these 23 players that you've chosen can focus now purely on Brazil," he said in a statement on U.S. Soccer's official website. "We can go into more specific things about technical approaches, and about the opponents. For the players, it's very important to know that they are now part of it and they can relax and know they are on the list going to Brazil and taking it from there. After almost 10 days of work right now, we thought the point has come to make the decision."

Klinsmann and his 23 players will now prepare for their three tune up games - Azerbaijan on May 27 in San Francisco, Turkey on June 1, in Harrison, New Jersey, and Nigeria on June 7 in Jacksonville, Florida - before heading to Brazil.

The seven players cut from the team will be placed on standby.
