RECAP: WEEKEND GERMAN ACTION
Christian Pulisic assisted on a goal in Borussia Dortmund's win over Timmy Chandler and Eintracht Frankfurt while a John Brooks' goal ensured Hertha Berlin took the defeat.
Borussia Dortmund 3-1 Eintracht Frankfurt
Smiles were brought back to the faces of Borussia Dortmund fans as their team romped to a comfortable win over Eintracht Frankfurt at the Signal Iduna Park as they ended what a rough week.
Pulisic started for BVB and played the entire game in the winning effort, while Timmy Chandler was in the starting lineup for Eintracht.
After a bomb attack ahead of their Champions League quarterfinal game against AS Monaco which left defender Marc Bartra injured, there were certainly a lot more the players' minds than playing a game. But they came out aggressive and showed that they will give their French opponents a difficult time when the second leg comes around.
Marco Reus, who made his return to BVB's lineup, opened the scoring in the third minute of play as he backheeled the crossed ball from Pulisic into the back of the net.
Marco Fabian leveled the score for Eintracht in the 29th minute as took an unbelievable strike from outside the area that Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Bürki had no chance of stopping.
However, the host would retake the lead in the 34th minute as Sokratis unleashed his own strike from outside the area that had Dortmund famds going crazy in the stands.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang capped off the game for BVB in the 86th minute when teammate Ousmane Dembele sent him a pass into the area and the Gabon international chipped the ball over Eintracht goalkeeper Lucas Hradecky and into the back of the net.
The win leaves BVB in fourth place in the standings with 53 points.
Mainz 1-0 Hertha Berlin
Last week, John Brooks scored a goal that helped the capital team to a win, but this time his goal scoring exploits helped Mainz in their battle to avoid relegation as Hertha's chances of holding on to a Europa League spot took a hit at the Opel Arena.
It was rather scrappy game, but things opened up just before halftime when Hertha goalkeeper Rune Jarstein cleared a Mainz corner kick from the area. However, the ball would not go very far and that allowed Danny Latza to take a blistering shot from the edge of the area. The ball would then bounce of Brooks' head and into his team's own net.
Hertha were immediately on the attack as the game entered the second when Salomon Kalou had a chance to score, but Mainz goalkeeper Jannik Huth was there to cover well.
The one goal would stand for the rest of the game as Hertha's difficulty at getting points on the road continued.
The loss leave Hertha in fifth place in the standings with 43 points.
Alfredo Morales started and played 69 minutes for Ingolstadt in their 3-0 loss to Wolfsburg.
Aron Johannsson watched from the bench in Werder Bremen's 2-1 win over a Bobby Wood-less Hamburg.
Russell Canouse came off the bench for Bochum in their 1-0 win over Greuther Furth.
Jerome Kiesewetter watched from the bench in Fortuna Düsseldorf's 1-1 tie with Dynamo Dresden.
Joe Gyau started while David Yelldell watched from the bench as Sonnenhof Großaspach secured a 2-1 win over Mainz II. SG are in the thick of the promotion chase in the 3. Liga as they currently sit in fifth place with 49 points - three points behind Holstein Kiel for the promotion playoff spot and four points behind Jahn Regensburg for the second automatic promotion spot.
Shawn Barry started for FSV Frankfurt in their 1-1 tie with Osnabrück.
Jann George started for Jahn Regensburg as they went on to secure a comfortable 3-1 win over Werder Bremen II.
