RECAP: WEEKEND BELGIAN RECAP
Not a great weekend for Americans in Belgium over the weekend as Sporting Lokeren and Club Brugge add nothing to their points tally, while KAA Gent threw a couple away late.
Royal Excelsior Mouscron 2-1 Club Brugge
Club Brugge's perfect season was brought to a screeching halt at Stade Le Canonnier thanks to a pair of Jonathan Bolingi goals in the first half of the game. American Ethan Hovarth was between the sticks to pick the ball out of the net twice as Club's winning streak ended at five games.
The first goal came in the 18th minute from the penalty spot after the referee blew his whistle for the softest of penalties when Anthony Limbombe tried to keep Fabrice Olinga from backing into him. Bolingi went to Horvath's left and the diving American couldn't get a hand to the shot.
Stefano Denswil evened things up for the visitors in the 25th minute when, off a corner kick, Ruud Vormer picked out his countryman and the Dutchman headed home from 8 yards out. The traveling fans didn't get to enjoy Brugge tying things up for very long because just five minutes before the intermission Mouscron regained the lead and never let it go.
Off a short corner, the ball was played out to Jeremy Huyghebaert and the Belgian defender hit the ball into the box. With the Horvath coming six yards off his line, he was left stranded when Bolingi got his head to it and left the American red-faced.
The Colorado native will get a chance to redeem himself Friday night when Club hosts Mechelen.
Juan Pablo Torres stayed rooted to the bench to witness Sporting Lokeren take a 2-1 half-time lead against Belgian champions Anderlecht, only to see them throw all the points away by letter the hosts score two unanswered goals after the intermission. Sporting will stay home Saturday night as they host Mechelen.
KAA Gent are still without Kenny Saief, who continues to recover from surgery, and are still without a victory this season. Danijel Milicevic's first half penalty was cancelled out very late in the game when Genk struck back in the 89th minute to share the points. The Flemish sides have collected three points from three draws, while losing the other three games this season. Next up is a short ride to the Belgian coast to face the only team that is worst than they are - last place (with no points) KV Oostende.
