RECAP: WEEKEND ENGLISH ACTION
DeAndre Yedlin played a role off the bench for Newcastle in their loss to Chelsea while Danny Williams and Huddersfield Town were shutout by a resurgent Everton.
Chelsea 3-1 Newcastle United
Goals from Eden Hazard and Alvaro Morata canceled out an earlier strike from Dwight Gayle as Chelsea dispatched of Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge.
Both teams are heading in contrasting directions in the standings as the Blues have overcome their slow start to the season to put themselves back in the top half of the table trying to catch Manchester City while the Magpies good start has now seen them take a tumble as they have gone winless in their past six games.
However, the visitors started things off positively as they gave Chelsea a shock in the 12th minute when Gayle poked home the ball.
The host were not deterred and cranked up the pressure to find the equalizer in the 21st minute when Hazard was able to pounce on a rebound in the area to blast his shot past Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow.
Morata gave Chelsea the lead in the 33rd minute when headed in a cross from Victor Moses at close range.
Hazard put the game out of reach in the 74th minute when he converted from the penalty spot after Matt Ritchie brought down Moses in the area.
Newcastle now sits in 15th place in the standings with 15 points.
Everton 2-0 Huddersfield Town
Everton followed up their big win in the middle of the week with another shutout as they beat Huddersfield Town at Goodison Park.
The game marked the debut of new Toffees coach Sam Allardyce who has been tasked with getting the team on the right track after a sluggish start to the season that saw them in the relegation zone. As for the Terriers, after a strong start to the season, David Wagner and his men are on a four-game losing streak.
The host scored the game's first in the 47th minute when Gylfi Sigurdsson ran onto a backheeled pass from teammate Dominic Calvert-Lewin to steer the ball past Huddersfield goalkeeper Jonas Lössl.
Huddersfield tried to find the equalizer but Everton went on to double the lead in the 73rd minute when Wayne Rooney released Calvert-Lewin with a through ball and his strike got past Lössl.
Huddersfield sits in 16th place in the standings with 15 points.
In the Championship, Cameron Carter-Vickers started for Sheffield United in their 3-1 loss to Millwall.
Eric Lichaj started for Nottingham Forest in their 4-2 loss to Ipswich Town.
Antonee Robinson started for Bolton Wanderers in their 3-1 win over Barnsley.
Luca de la Torre came off the bench for Fulham in their 3-1 loss to Brentford.
Lynden Gooch came off the bench for Sunderland in their 3-1 loss to Reading.
