RECAP: WEEKEND ENGLISH ACTION
DeAndre Yedlin and Newcastle ended their season with a big win over Chelsea while Tim Ream and Fulham will have their work cut out following a playoff loss to Derby County.
Newcastle United 3-0 Chelsea
Newcastle ensured they would finish in the top ten of the Premier League as they dismantled Chelsea at St. James' Park.
Yedlin started for the Magpies in the win.
Having already ensured their Premier League status for next season, Newcastle now had the chance to play the role of spoiler as Chelsea still were within a shot of capturing a Champions League spot as Liverpool held on to fourth place.
The host made it a difficult day for their opponents as they went on to score the opener in the 23rd minute. Chelsea goalkeeper Thibault Cortouis was able to do enough to prevent Jacob Murphy from scoring, but he swiped the ball into the path of Dwight Gayle who headed it in from close range.
The second half showed more of Newcastle's dominance as Ayoze Perez doubled their lead before the hour mark when Jonjo Shelvey's powerful low shot was redirected into the goal by the Spanish forward.
Perez scored his second on the day in the 63rd minute when ran on the a free-kick from Shelvey and volleyed his shot past Cortouis.
Newcastle finishes the season in 10th place in the standings with 44 points.
Derby County 1-0 Fulham
Cameron Jerome's first half goal was enough to help Derby County enter the second leg of their promotion playoff with an advantage as they defeated Fulham at Pride Park Stadium.
Ream started the game for the Cottagers.
After missing out on automatic promotion in the final week of the Championship season, Fulham had to focus all of their attention on trying to get through their semifinal encounter to make it to Wembley for another chance at Premier League glory.
The visitors showed they were not imtimidated playing away for the first leg as they dominated possession and had a few good chances at goal.
However, the host would score when it counted as Jerome rose up to head in a cross from teammate Craig Forsyth to give the Rams the lead in the 38th minute.
Despite being a goal down, it did not stop Fulham from pushing and they came close to finding the equalizer in the second half when Kevin McDonald's blistering shot came crashing off the crossbar. Floyde Ayite followed up with his own near-miss later when his volleyed effort just went over the bar.
Fulham may have been defeated, but they will have a chance to turn things around when both sides face each other again for the second leg at Craven Cottage.
Duane Holmes started for Scunthorpe United as their first leg League One semifinal playoff game against Rotherham United ended in a 2-2 tie. They will play the second leg on Wednesday at the New York Stadium.
Emerson Hyndman started for Bournemouth as they ended their season with a 2-1 win over Burnley.
Geoff Cameron watched from the bench as Stoke City said goodbye to the Premier League with 2-1 win over Swansea City.
