RECAP: WEEKEND BELGIAN ACTION
Chris Durkin was the only American to see action in Belgium as he scored his first goal for Sint-Truiden in their big win over KAS Eupen.
Sint-Truiden 5-2 KAS Eupen
Sint-Truiden went on a goal surge as they gave their opponents, KAS Eupen, a heavy defeat at the Stayen Stadium.
Durkin started on the bench but came on in the 70th minute to replace Jordan Botaka. His teammate, Samuel Asamoah, registered a hat-trick before being shown a red card.
Mory Konate got things underway for just 13 minutes into the game when he out jumped his marker to head a corner kick into the back of the net. On the half hour mark however, Smail Prevljak got Eupen back on terms with his equalizer. Not only did the visitors get back into the game but they took the lead 10 minutes later when Prevljak hit the post from close range but Jens Cools was on hand to tuck it past the Canaries keeper.
Before half time however the hosts were back in the lead. Asamoah's first one was a true team goal with a series of passes around the box that ended with the midfielder from Ghana scoring from 10 yards out. At the 42 minute mark the score was all tied up again; that is until a minute into stoppage time when Facundo Colidio served it on a plate to Asamoah who didn't miss from six yards in front of the Eupen goal.
The Eupen coach's half time talk obviously had no effect on his players because they surrendered a couple more goals in the second half. Asamoah was booked minutes after the restart, then completed his hat trick in the 63rd minute. Again this was another tap in. He celebrated by pulling his shirt over his head to reveal the message that "Jesus love you" on his undershirt. The referee saw that as a bookable offense and showed a second yellow, leaving Sint-Truiden with 10 men. It didn't seem to matter however. Santiago Colombatto ran half the length of the field, picked out his young American teammate and watched Durkin score from just inside the 18 yard box.
The three points leaves Sint-Truiden just five out of a top 6 play-off spot but with only five games remaining, so it will be a difficult feat. Up next is a home game against cellar dwellers Cercle Brugge.
Kenny Saief remained in purple limbo as Anderlecht eked out a 1-1 draw with KAA Gent, which leaves them just one place and two points ahead of Sint Truiden. They will also struggle to make it into the top play-off group but will also look to add three points when they travel to Mechelen on Saturday evening.
Isiah Young didn't make the bench for Union St Gilloise as they played a scoreless draw on the road against Excelsior Virton. They'll play their third away game in a row on Tuesday evening when they make the short journey to take on OH Leuven.
KSV Roeselare fell to the same OH Leuven team over the weekend 2-1, but Ethan Bryant was left off the team sheet for this one. They'll travel over the weekend to take on Young and Union in their next contest.
