RECAP: BELGIAN CUP ACTION
While most of the soccer world was on international break, the Belgian Cup continued over the weekend and one top-flight team was involved with one Yank, Joe Efford.
Waasland Beveren 3-0 Sparta Petegem
The Pro League side took on Sparta Petegem from the Second Amateur Division (level 4) over the weekend and put three goals past Sparta to earn a place in the next round of cup clashes. Efford put in a 76 minutes shift but it was Swiss striker Michael Frey bagging a couple of goals and another by Daan Heymans to seal the victory.
The amateur team knew that they would have their hands full when they traveled to the Freethiel Stadium in Beveren and gave a good showing for the first half-hour when the Lions opened up the scoring. This was stuck in by the team's top goal-getter, Heymans from inside the box. From the kick-off it was the Pro League team that had the better chances, especially by Frey and Efford but the Sparta shot-stopper was able to keep the ball out of the back of his net.
It was the second half where the game was put to bed when Frey not only scored two goals but these were also his first goals in the yellow-blue shirt. His first came in the 52nd minute when the team charged forward and Jenthe Mertens put in a perfect cross from the right side of the box that found the Swiss man who had a tap in.
The visitors gave a good account of themselves and had some shots on goal in the second half but nothing that Nordin Jackers couldn't handle. Then six minutes before the full 90, if the game wasn't already over, it was then. Frey received the ball just inside the 18-yard box and although there were a few defenders closing him down, he got the shot off and saw the ball slip just inside the far post.
The team will have to wait to find out their next round opponents but do know that when they next take the field, it will be against KV Oostende in league action.
