ROSTER ANNOUNCED FOR CUBA QUALIFIER
The US has named its roster for the October 11th qualifying match against Cuba at RFK Stadium. The US has called in 23 players for training to begin in Washington DC on Monday.
The roster includes a majority of the starters from the last three qualifying matches, from which the US took all nine points. Coach Bob Bradley will also have appeased those clamoring for the inclusion of Freddy Adu of AS Monaco and Josmer Altidore of FC Villareal, both of whom are included.
Perhaps the most interesting name on the roster is that of Texas native José Francisco Torres of Mexico's Pachuca. The left footed midfielder has been a regular in the Mexican first division since moving to Pachuca as a youth, but until now has postponed the decision on whether to play for Mexico or the United States on the international level. San Luis defender Michael Orozco joins Torres from the Mexican first division.
Another new face is goalkeeper Troy Perkins, who will get a look after a solid season in Norway. Charlie Davies was called in as well, in the midst of a breakout year with Hammarby in the Swedish league. Danny Szetela also gets another look after impressing in the Italian second division with Brescia.
American players were called from an astounding eleven different leagues spanning Europe and North America.
The US leads the four team semi-final group comfortably, with nine points. Guatemala and Trinidad and Tobago are next with four, while Cuba is pointless.
