ADU EXCITED FOR NEW CHALLENGE
Freddy Adu has only been with his new club Belenenses for a few weeks, but the former DC United midfielder seems to be fitting in well after seeing his first playing time this past week in the Portuguese League Cup.
The American desperately hopes to play regularly - and play well - for there to be any chance of convincing Bob Bradley to make room for him on the plane to South Africa next summer.
"It's a new opportunity here and I'm loving it," the 20-year old midfielder told YA after the match. "It felt really good to be out there again playing."
Outside of a brief flurry of game action at the beginning of the 2007 season, Adu has been glued to the bench the last two seasons with both Benfica and Monaco. However, Despite the short amount of time he has been with his new club, he is optimistic the environment at Belenenses will help his career get back on track.
"It is a great group of guys and I really like my coach," added Adu. "[Coach Joao Carlos Pereira] is always straight forward with you and tells you exactly what he wants out of you, and I like that."
In his first appearance, Adu certainly made a strong case for more minutes with his performance on the field. During only 26 minutes of play against Rio Ave, the young American was a spark for Belenenses, setting up three golden opportunities that his teammates were unable to put away.
"I hope I did enough to get more chances," Adu optimistically concluded. "But we shall see."
Adu's next opportunity will come on the October 4th against Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon, as he hopes to help Belenenses climb out of the gutter of the league after a poor start to the season.
