RECAP: WEEKEND MEXICAN ACTION
Herculez Gomez scores in his first start of the season helping Puebla draw with Atlante while Edgar Castillo finds redemption in the 90th with a crucial assist for Tigres versus Pumas.
Indios 0-1 Morelia
Indios' days in the first division of the Mexican league appeared to be numbered as their winless streak continued this Sunday with a loss to visiting Morelia.
Indios, who have only one point on the season, started off the game well and had a clear chance at goal when Hectór Gimenez found himself with the ball in front of the goal in the 25th minute. However, he could only shoot wide. Indios would not have another clear chance at goal the rest of the match.
Elías Hernández gave Morelia the lead with a spectacular goal when he shot towards the left post after receiving a pass in the area, although apparently from an offside position.
American Marco Vidal made his third consecutive start of the season playing in the midfield in a five man defensive formation. He drew a yellow card in the 65th minute when Jorge Fernandez was sanctioned for a hard foul. Vidal played the entire 90 minutes.
The loss for Indios was not for a lack of heart, as it was clear they left it all on the field. However wasted opportunities continue to curse this team from Ciudad Juarez.
They will look to turn it around next week when they visit San Luis on Saturday.
Atlante 1-1 Puebla
In an exciting game, Puebla came within minutes of coming away with a win on Saturday night in Cancun.
It was back and forth in a game that was a must win for both squads, with Atlante taking the majority of the offensive initiative.
However, it was American Herculez Gomez in his first start of the season who gave Puebla the advantage in the 47th minute after heading in a pass from Luis Noriega.
Atlante fought back desperately for the equalizer. Tempers started to rise until Atlante miraculously found the back of the net in the 89th minute after Puebla goalie Jorge Villalpando cleared the ball poorly and kicked it directly to Atlante forward Rafael Marquez Lugo who shot toward the left post.
The shot might have saved Atlante's season as a loss would have meant one point in four games.
While Atlante was lucky to escape with a point, they still have much work up ahead if they hope to remain in the first division.
Puebla, whose season has been up and down continue to struggle to finish games. Herculez Gomez will try to cement his starting spot when Puebla host Pachuca next week.
Tigres 2-2 Pumas
Tigres came from behind in an exciting tie on Saturday night at the Estadio Universitario in Monterrey.
In a game in which Tigres looked left for dead, they managed to score two goals in the final 10 minutes to escape with a draw and prevent Pumas from reaching the top spot in their group.
Israel Castro got on the scoreboard for Pumas in the 16th minute off a laser shot from outside the area; a goal that was similar to his goal against the U.S. in the Gold Cup final last summer.
Pumas controlled the pace the rest of the first half and created several decent chances, including a shot from Leandro Augusto in the 35th that went straight the goalkeeper's hands.
Brazilian Itamar Batista missed a clear chance to tie for Tigres in the 51st when his shot from inside the area was deflected by Bernal.
In the 80th minute, Pumas would score again after American Edgar Castillo, who played all 90 minutes, turned the ball over to Pablo Barrera who buried a shot on the right post.
Batista struck back quickly in the 81st minute after receiving the ball in the area from a pass by Luca Lobos and quickly shot past Pumas goalkeeper Sergio Bernal.
Castillo made up for his earlier error in the 89th minute when he delivered a cross to Batista in the area who shot towards the right post for his second goal of the game.
It was an incredible comeback for Tigres who have now drawn in two consecutive matches. They will look to continue the momentum when the play crosstown rivals Monterrey next Sunday.
Francisco Torres did not play in Pachuca's 2-0 victory over San Luis. He is recovering from a slight hamstring tear.
