BRIAN SCIARETTA - Tuesday, June 29, 2010
US U20 head coach Thomas Rongen today announced a 24 man roster for a camp that will take place in San Jose from June 27-July 5 which marks the fifth time Rongen has held a U20 gathering for the 2011 cycle.

The roster contains many players that have never played for the U20 team. The most noteworthy new player is former U17 star and Sporting Lisbon left back Greg Garza. Garza will arrive in San Jose only days after helping Sporting's U19 win the Portuguese title.

The roster will also draw a lot of attention for having eight players that currently play in Mexico. This cycle has seen Rongen make an aggressive push to make inroads with the massive Mexican-American community and this roster marks his most substantial effort to date.

The roster contains three players in Christian Flores, Justin Perez, and Julio Castillo who all play for C.F. Monterrey and who will all be making their debut for the US U20 team

There are also a few players that will come to San Jose from clubs not often frequented by US players. Midfielder Kevyn Batista will travel from Brazil where he currently plays for Desportivo Brasil. In similar fashion, forward Ronald Mendrano Williams will travel from Costa Rica where he currently plays with Alajuelense.

The US team will be lead by University of Notre Dame central midfielder Dillon Powers who is the only player on the roster who played for the 2009 U20 World Cup team. Powers has played with the team in this cycle and was the team's captain when he played at the Dallas Cup in March.

During this camp, the US will scrimmage twice against the San Jose Earthquakes of MLS and play two local teams who have yet to be determined.

Rongen is still looking to create a nucleus of players that he can build his team around that will take part in U20 World Cup qualifying in seven months and hopefully next summer's World Cup in Colombia should the team qualify.

The U20 team will also take part in the 2010 Milk Cup next month in Northern Ireland.
