Sacha Kljestan started but did not go the distance as Anderlecht played to a lethargic scoreless draw on the road at Stade du Pays de Charleroi.

Kljestan started at midfielder for the visitors but was substituted off in the 57th minute for forward Romelu Lukaku.

Overall the play of the former Chivas USA man was an improvement over last week's league opener however Anderlecht still sputtered to find the clinching goal despite dominating ball possession.

Ariel Jacobs' club was coming off a resounding midweek Champions League victory over The New Saints and appeared to have a hungover look about them on the field.

Both teams exchanged opportunities in the first half including an impressive long-range effort from Anderlecht's Guillaume Gillet that required a heads-up save from the Charleroi goalkeeper Cyprien Baguette.

Jacobs opted to bring on Lukaku for Kljestan just before the hour mark in an obvious move to find a goal but it would not pay dividends.

One of the best opportunities that the Purple & White had in the second 45 minutes was a late free kick from Moroccan midfielder Mbark Boussoufa that Baguette managed to corral.

Kljestan and company's next Eerste Klasse contest will come next weekend at home versus Antwerp club Germinal Beerschot.
