Saint Etienne continued their stellar start to the season after a convincing win over Montpellier on Saturday which catapulted the Loire team to the top of table.

U.S. Men's National Team captain Carlos Bocanegra started and played the full 90 minutes at left back, helping the defense seal their second clean sheet in six games.

French youth international Emmanuel Riviere nearly put the home team in front after five minutes after a good cross from Bakary Sako but his glancing header was parried by goalkeeper Geoffrey Jourdren.

Saint Etienne grew more confident as the game went on and took the lead in the 21st minute after a highlight reel goal from the team's leading goalscorer Dimitri Payet. After picking up the ball on the right wing, the 23-year old attacking midfielder ghosted past three players before beating Jourdren at the near post.

With French national team coach Laurent Blanc in the stands, Riviere did not fail to impress when he headed home in the 32nd minute after a good run through the box.

Payet outdid himself in the 66th minute, finishing the game off with a stunning 30-yard free kick from that went in off the left post.

Sitting on top of Ligue 1 with 13 points, Saint Etienne now turn their attention to the Coupe de la Ligue where they face Nice on Wednesday.
