RECAP: WEEKEND IRISH ACTION
Ryan Guy and St. Patrick's Athletic fell to a surprise defeat to Dundalk as they suffered their ninth defeat of the Airtricity League Premier Division season at Richmond Park on Friday.
St. Patrick's Athletic 1-2 Dundalk
Guy never really got going as St Pat's lost at home to Dundalk for the first time since 1989 and missed out on boosting their chances of securing a Europa League spot.
Even though they started well with Brian Cash, David McAllister, Derek Pender and Stuart Byrne all trying their luck with shots on goal from distance, the Saints lost their grip on this game when Ian Bermingham was sent off on 29 minutes.
The Saints left-back kicked out at Tom Miller and was shown a straight red card, which came three minutes after Dundalk had taken the lead through Matthew Tipton following a swift counter attack.
Ross Gaynor doubled the visitor's lead on 52 minutes when Fahrudin Kuduzovic's shot was blocked by Pender and rebounded out to the winger to smash in from close range.
Guy started the game up front but switched to the right wing when the hosts were reduced to ten men and he struggled to make an impact, so it was hardly surprising when he was replaced on 63 minutes by Sean Stewart.
St Pat's did pull a goal back when Damian Lynch bundled in at the second attempt when his spot-kick was saved by Peter Cherrie after Liam Burns had fouled Conor Kenna.
However, that goal could not inspire a fightback as Pete Mahon's men slipped to their fourth defeat at home. Next up is a trip across Dublin to take on Sporting Fingal on Saturday.
Chris Konopka was an un-used substitute for Waterford United in their 3-0 win over Limerick.
