RECAP: WEEKEND FINNISH ACTION
Greg Eckhardt and VPS split the points with Oulu while Lamar Neagle's first goal for IFK Mariehamn was not enough to overcome MyPA in Veikkausliiga action.
Oulu 1 - 1 VPS
Greg Eckhardt started and went the full 90 minutes as VPS grabbed a share of the points against Oulu on Sunday afternoon at Castrén Stadion in Oulu.
The former Clemson standout also picked up a yellow card in the 15th minute for the visitors who are still slightly above the relegation playoff zone.
Jyri Hietaharju broke through first for the visitors right before halftime when he outraced the Oulu defense and managed to get a touch on the ball a split second before Oulu goalkeeper Dennys Rodrigues could clear it.
Hietaharju pushed the ball to his right, past the Brazilian netminder and then slid a shot into the open net.
Thinking they would hit the locker rooms with an advantage, VPS let their guard down and allowed Oulu a quick equalizer less than a minute later.
A cross into the area from the right side found an unmarked Frank Jonke who volleyed it home to level things up.
The two teams exchanged chances in the second half but a gamewinner was not to be found.
Next up for VPS will be a home match in two weeks versus Tampere United.
MyPA 2 - 1 IFK Mariehamn
Lamar Neagle's first Veikkausliiga goal was not enough for Marieham who were downed by MyPa on Saturday afternoon at Saviniemi Stadion in Kouvola.
Neagle came on as a substitute in the second half before scoring his goal while compatriots Mason Trafford and Giuseppe Funicello were 90 minute men in defense.
Ville Oksanen opened the scoring for the hosts in the 29th minute when defender Antti Uimaniemi found Oksanen on a cross from the left side and Oksanen fired home from just inside the area.
Eleven minutes later MyPA were at it again, this time with Toni Lindberg playing the role of hero by slipping behind two Mariehamn defenders and heading in a shot at the far post.
Neagle got the visitors back into the game just seconds after coming on the field. Forward Wilhelm Ingves did the leg work swerving around a couple MyPA defenders right by the end line before sliding in a shot to Neagle who touched it in to halve the lead.
However the American's goal would not be enough as MyPA rode away with the three points leaving Mariehamn still just three points above the relegation playoff spot.
Next up for the islanders is a visit to Lahti in two weeks.
