RECAP: EJIDO 1 - 1 VILLARREAL
Jozy Altidore scored his first goal for Villarreal this season as the Yellow Submarine drew with Segunda B club Polideportivo Ejido on Wednesday night in Round of 32 action in Spain's Copa del Rey.
Altidore started up front along side young Ecuadorian striker Jefferson Montero and went the distance.
In an ironic twist, the pairing between the two clubs was a rematch of their 2008 Copa del Rey meeting when a Jorge Molina hat trick pulverized Villarreal in the first leg 5-0 demolition.
The Andalusian club from Spain's third level of soccer advanced to the next round on the aggregate so revenge was at the forefront of Villarreal's mind entering the match at Estadio Municipal Santo Domingo.
The American forward made sure there would not be a repeat of that humiliation when he tallied the game's first goal in the 44th minute.
Montero, who was impressive all night long, made a move on the Ejido defense to free up enough space to then send a pass across to Altidore.
After failing to capitalize on countless scoring opportunities in previous matches, the former Hull City man made no mistake on Montero's pass and scored for the visitors.
The second half saw an exchange of chances between the two teams, but nothing that ever came to fruition until second half stoppage time when Ejido drew level courtesy of a goal by midfielder Moreno.
The return leg between the two will be played November 10th.
Next up for Altidore and company is a trip to Asturias to take on Sporting Gijon on Sunday.
